Yes, and Baylor has them on the schedule in football in the next few years.

I said a while back that one route the WAC could go would be to bring in the 5 best Lonestar programs.

UIW's stadium is named for New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson.

Sam Houston St and Lamar have expressed interest in the Belt and been turned down. Any school that has been rejected by the Belt is pursuing other avenues to FBS, including Jax St and EKU. S F Austin doesn't have the enrollment or local media of those two, but likely don't want to be left behind. Mo St needs to be FBS to move up, but they can't afford to leave the MVC to do it. Wichita St needs FBS to become a full member of the AAC, as that league won't take a start up fb program.

But what does this mean for the future Montana-Dakotas FBS power conference?

Nothing has changed to alter it. Montana just got a business executive as president, so just waiting for an IPFW offer elsewhere to get things in motion. IPFW is actively looking and badly wants out.

UMKC might have a football spot in the reborn FBS WAC too. That could have been the strategic thought on why they went and rebuffed the Summit.

UTPB might be a school to look out for to going to D1. Odessa s the hotbed for high school football recruits. They do play in a 20,000 seat stadium as well.

I do like the area to someday have a Div 1 team, but I think it might still be under populated for Div 1 football. They do have great high school games there that draw very well, but I'm not sure a university of only 5,500 students should really push for D1. Get that enrollment closer to 10,000 first and I think they'd be great in the Southland then.

Tarleton St just started a $26 million renovation of its football stadium last month. Seem to be real serious about moving up to the Southland. The money courtesy of the Texas legislature.

Looks like a nice renovation. The project might have multiple purposes. Although one purpose might be in preparation for a possible move up attempt, the main purpose might be for needed improvements and to keep up with other Lone Star Conference members. The last major renovation at Tarleton State's Memorial Stadium was in 1988-89. The first part of the current project is to replace turf installed in 2004. Tarleton State's current project will increase capacity from 7,000 to 9,000 plus several other nice improvements.

Five of the current Lone Star Conference members have stadiums with capacities ranging from 13,500 to 20,000. Most conference members are either building new stadiums or have had a series of recent facility improvements. West Texas A&M's new stadium is planned to start late this year. Midwestern State, currently using a high school stadium, is exploring the construction of an on campus stadium. Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M-Commerce, and Angelo State have had several major improvements in recent years. One member, UT-Permian Basin, plays in 19,302 seat Ratliff Stadium of "Friday Night Lights" fame.

So is hypothetical WAC football a bunch of Lonestar teams plus Azusa Pacific in FCS?

Or could you do something crazy where by virtue of having New Mexico St they can host FBS football with Liberty, UMass, and anyone else with a pulse as affiliates?

See the first post plus maybe add UMKC. Liberty and UMass would play those schools but it's not in their interest to align with them.

I think the best of the Lonestar could definitely pull of DI FCS--they just need a conference structure to serve as a shell and a few extra members to do it. Personally I think the WAC should agree to be the shell as the influx of new members, even if it means a cumbersome amount, because it secures a stable conference home for the rest of the league, which currently teeters on the edge.

RE: Tarleton St creates DI task force for DI move up
Dixie State is renovating their stadium to seat 15,000. That would be on the edge of FBS in the future. They could be a travel mate for Utah Valley in all the sports.

WAC might look into adding a RMAC Colorado school as well. There are a possible 3 to 4 candidates there as well.

Would Seattle like a travel partner for them to feel safe?

Now, several of the Lone Star schools could actually have the stadiums to push for FBS status down the road. West Texas A&M would be reuniting with New Mexico State in the WAC since they do have history together. Since nobody wants New Mexico State, it would give them a safety blanket to fall back on.

RE: Tarleton St creates DI task force for DI move up
Tarleton is located just over an hour southwest of DFW. It pulls a large percentage of its students from the Metroplex and the alumni move there after graduation. It has offered classes in Fort Worth for more than a decade and recently established a new campus just outside of Fort Worth.

The university has been considering this for more than a decade.

2003- Tries to join Southland, but A&M-Corpus and Central Arkansas were supposedly chosen because Corpus was already D1 with good facilities and a promised to consider football. UCA offered a new market to expand the brand. Most damning for Tarleton was that the facilities were supposedly not up to snuff.

2007- Tarleton announces master plan with D1 as stated goal and facility renovations
2009- Students vote to increase athletic fee from $6 to $10 per credit hour to finance enhancements
2012- Southland loses 3 schools (TXST,UTSA,UTA) and starts looking for replacements. Adds UIW to keep San Antonio market, ACU because of money and athletic success, and three other members for markets (Houston Baptist, New Orleans, Oral Roberts).
2013- Tarleton students increase athletic fee from $10 to $22 to again enhance facilities.
2013- Tarleton plays game against ACU in Frisco, TX (same city as Southland headquarters)

2015- Tarleton President and AD hold open forum to gauge campus interest in D1. Mentions conversation with SLC leadership. Thinks proximity to DFW is a selling point to the conference. However, at that point the league had some transitioning teams (ACU and UIW) and the AD thought they would want them fully transitioned before they looked at more teams. They speculated that Tarleton would be looked at again once the transition is complete.

2015- Tarleton Mens Basketball advances to the D2 Final 4 for the second time. Alumni come out of the woodwork and talks of d1 gets louder.
2016- Plan for Football Stadium expansion are reviewed
2017- Football stadium renovation is started. ACU and UIW now full members.

October 2017 - President makes announcement that he want to convene a committee to discuss a potential move.

Fees are in place and enrollment is now above 12,000. Facility enhancements are happening all over campus and especially around athletics. Tennis courts redone. Rec fields for intramural soccer have been made NCAA soccer ready. Football improvements underway and President talks about new swim/dive complex.

Just my 2 cents- Tarleton wasn't ready when ACU moved up. They learned from being left behind and started pushing full force to get things in place when the next offer would come. SLC wasnt ready to expand while ACU and UIW were in their 5 year transition window. That has come to a close and they are now full D1 members. At this point, the SLC can explore taking on another transition team.

They are not the only Lone Star school that is considering to go D1. All I could see it would be WAC and the Southland could form a 3 football conferences if they could. I am looking at Oklahoma and Arkansas schools to make the move, and maybe a Missouri S&T and Missouri Southern move as the most northern schools to move. WAC takes the western most Lone Star schools. Southland would be Louisiana, Mississippi(Delta State, Mississippi College), Arkansas, Missouri and Christian Brothers in Memphis The Texas Southland schools take the rest of the Lone Star, Central Oklahoma, Rogers State (Tulsa area) and maybe a Pittsburg State in Kansas. WAC gets Angelo State, UTPB, Colorado State-Pueblo, Colorado Mesa or Metro State, Dixie State, ACU, West Texas A&M, IWU, Azusa Pacific, Central Washington or Western Washington, Fort Hays State, Washburn, and maybe a Missouri Western to go with UMKC. We need to find a spot for UC-San Diego and some others out west that wants to move up. WAC would take anybody they can get.

that article is incorrect the money was not from the Texas Legislature (that would be illegal) the money is from bonds that are backed by student athletics fees and if that does not cover it general student services fees

the "approval" was for bonds to be issued by the A&M System

there was no state money pledged or appropriated for that project

Thanks for that clarification. But that bond approval seems to imply that the A&M System approves of a DI move for Tarleton, and by extension A&M-Commerce.

If you don't consider history and simply consider all their current key measureables (location, enrollment, budget, facilities, et cetera) --- it's really surprising that Tarleton State is currently NOT a D-1/FCS program. They check nearly all the boxes.

On a bit of a tangent - I just looked up Angelo State, thinking they may be a D-1/FCS prospect too. But they are considerably further down in terms of enrollment and such. Lone Star is still their best fit. Ditto for West Texas A&M. Who was at the highest levels of college football not that long ago, of course!
