Best case realignment scenario
What is the best conference realignment case for your team? Keeping in mind football and basketball, along with secondary sports like baseball, womens basketball and soccer. For ODU I think this would be the best conference for us.

North:
ODU - Good basketball program, football is competitive and getting better
JMU - regional rival for ODU (teams already dont like each other) good football, no basketball
Marshall - good football program, basketball has gotten much better
WKU - good football and basketball
UMass - good basketball program and football is looking for a home
MTSU - good football and basketball has kept C-USA on the map
App State - good football no basketball

South:
Coastal Carolina - good baseball, we will see in football and no basketball
Charlotte - decent basketball, no football yet
Ga Southern - not sure what happened to football, no basketball
Ga State - good basketball, football is struggling
UAB - good basketball and football is back
Southern Miss - good football program with no basketball
La Tech - pretty good football and basketball programs

Haha done! I was on the fence about Ga State anyways. I really think that could be a good conference that people in the southeast would buy into.

Keep GAST. Lose Charlotte and UMESS and add Ark State for WKU and Troy for UAB. The point of realignment is not to "give people a home" but to get schools that are competive and will generate tv money and payouts. Especially if you're proposing a 14 team conference in this day and age.

You do understand that one of the main reasons that the old SWC came apart was that TV wants to get most possible exposure, right? If your whole conference is in one state (and 1.0 added Arkansas) you are going to get half the money for your TV contract - if you're lucky.

Everybody who used to play eachother in D1-AA and whose fan bases already know each other raise your hand. Oh look:

Marshall, ODU, JMU, MT, App, GS, Troy, UAB, WKU, Ark State, USM, and La Tech all raised their hands

Strong football/basketball/baseball, similar institutions, current/former rivalries, similar academics, large fan bases, committed to athletics.

Look at how easy that was

I like this conference. If you had 12 teams it could be

North:
Old Dominion
James Madison
App State
Western Kentucky
Middle Tennesee
Marshall

South:
Charlotte
Coastal Carolina
UAB
Ga Southern
Troy
Southern Miss

Works really well with Charlotte being the geographic center.

RE: Best case realignment scenario
CUSA has an identity issue. The western schools (UTEP, UTSA, UNT, Rice, LaTech) are in a completely different region of the country than the others.

I would take those 5 and throw in NMSU (BB), Texas St and Louisiana for a new SWC conference. Keep it at 8 schools to maximize NCAA and CFP payouts.

It would help to create more of a MWC or MAC situation where there is a regional identity to the conference. The western schools are mostly B12/SEC footprint with a little MWC/AAC overlap. Potential for a decent bowl package too.

CUSA East schools overlap directly with the ACC, SEC, AAC and SBC. Might make sense to go super regional with AState, Coastal, the 2 Georgia schools and App State. That should be enough to kill off the SBC at least and tighten up geography considerably.

I’m a little disappointed that many of y’all have such low expectations for a “best case scenario” for your school. If you love your school, go all out!
