RE: Villanova @ JMU Thread
November 12, 2016...JMU at Villanova. The Dukes were coming off a win at Richmond, 47-43. A lot of Dukes fans were feeling are we back to the days of having to outscore opponents to win games.

Bryan Schor was knocked out of the game early in the 2Q with the Dukes leading 7-0. This game featured the CAA's top offense (JMU) against the CAA's top defense (VU). Nova tied the game 7-7 heading into the halftime locker room.

The Dukes defense pitched a 2nd half shutout, including a nice stand at the end and notching 4 interceptions for the game. It was the start of something special where this defense realized it could be good. Coming off giving up 43 points, it was a nice shot in the arm (especially with Schor going out) to see the defense put the team on its back and win a game...for a change it seemed at the time.

That game started a streak that has seen the Dukes give up 17 or less points in 10 of our next 11 games. And, the only game that went over 17 was the playoff opener where UNH scored a TD with 20 seconds left in the game and finished with 22 pts. 8 of the 10 games in this stretch the Dukes have given up 14 or less.

Shut 'em out, Dukes!

I've been watching them all season. Excellent production quality for the most part with few hiccups. I'm sure someone will jump on me for it but I'll even say its production quality is better than madizone. Never once had a buffering issue which madizone has done historically.
My only complaint is their scoreboard bar sometimes doesn't have the time or down and distance and if it does, it's slow to update. A few more camera angles would be nice, but it's on par with madizone in that regard.
Where it really shines, and this is not a knock on the great Curt Dudley, is their two commentators are impressing me. They seem to be taking the time to understand and learn about the teams they're calling. For example, in the CSU/Elon game, Malcolm Summers had a truly remarkable run for a TD. I think he made five or six different defenders miss, he tip toes the sidelines and somehow stayed upright for a 30 yard scamper into the endzone.
The play by play guy was fumbling over his own words for a good five seconds in sheer amazement over what he just saw. That kind of enthusiasm adds to the broadcast to me. In his defense, I also had my jaw on the ground on that play. It was sportscenter worthy.

There's the video of the play I mentioned if you're interested. First video on the page.

don't know if this was already mentioned or not, but let's all remember when Schor's career began: the last time we had CGD.

Just listened to HCMH on CAA media call... and I feel 100% better about this game now. He sounded almost irritated about CGD being here. Night and day vs the last HC. Let’s do this. Team will be ready. Go Dukes!

If he can have us have a dominant performance vs villanova with this week, that is truly an impressive coaching performance.

We'll see how hard-headed coach Houston is. We know he wants to run and be physical and that is what Villanova will be begging him to do as they bring more run defenders than JMU has blockers. The formula to beat Villanova is with quick short passes to the outside while their defenders are jammed inside. It works all day against their alignment.
300+ yards passing with a ton of YAC is the minimum expectation for this week. Completion percentage could be 80-90% if JMU sticks to the short stuff.

This is a solid analysis. I will add that if the o line can give Schor time, the deep ball will be there as the game goes on. I see Nova stacking the box with their secondary playing deep to keep the receivers in front of them to start the game. After JMU short passes them to death and takes a 2-3 touchdown lead, I see the secondary moving up because they will have to do so.

As long as Schor and the offense doesnt turn the ball over multiple times, I dont see our defense letting us lose this game. Could be another close, frustrating game. 23-14 Dukes

I say 42-10. After a couple of mediocre offensive performances, Schor and company have a break out game. The Seniors remember how the loss to UR dampened an amazing day in '15. They won't let it happen a second time.

Against Maine, VU opened with a nice 7 play 54 yard drive to score a TD...

After that, their TD scores came right off of Maine turnovers.

99 yard fumble return
40 yard TD drive after INT
32 yard TD drive after INT

Outside of the opening drive, they got nothing going with any kind of green grass in front of them.

Yep and Maine slightly out gained them in overall yardage throughout the game.

I'm usually one to agree with these sentiments, but a couple of things:

1. Maine always plays us tough, and that game was on the road, with Maine coming off a bye and two weeks to prepare.
2. Delaware is coached by Danny Rocco, who knows us well and hates our guts. They were also coming off a bye with two weeks to prepare. And hell, Delaware gave Tech a hard time in Blacksburg, and we played them in Newark.

I predict a modest but convincing victory. A couple of touchdowns and a late second-half pullaway.

Massey - 17 pt favorites, 88% chance of winning. Our most likely remaining potential loss.
Sagarin - 12 pt favorites

Based on your context, I can't really tell if you got that wrong. But the Maine game was in Harrisonburg.

JMU is #1 and VU #14 on the latest coaches poll. Top 15 match up.

For comparison, the 2015 CGD game vs UR was #4 JMU and #11 Richmond.

Similar to a 2nd round playoff game...or, what would be expected - though, I know they only seed the top 8 and 1st round matchups are not driven as much by seeds and are often driven by geography.

I wish one of the CGD guys would have the nads to mention that D1AA has the right formula to determine its champion (read: legit playoff system)...same for D2, D3, NFL, and HS football...and, practically every other sport other than gymnastics, figure skating, synchronized swimming and D1A FB.

I was left very impressed with Mack after our game. So, either our running D isn't that great or Nova's is excellent.

I am with you. Our offense and special teams are not up to last years standards. Our defense is very good but ECU is the only offense that had a passing game worth a dime. Nova poses little threat in the air. I am hoping the bye week does us some good. Last year we were a different team after the week off but until I see it, 20-13 Dukes.

Brown has a sack, forced fumble, and 3 tackles for loss. If we decide to lock down on the run game or blitz the heck out of them, Jordan will have a field day. He's been amazing this year at getting in the backfield and creating chaos. I think he continues that this week and earns CAA DPoW
Raven, Robinston, and Moreland combine for two INTs between them and completely shut down their WRs. Their backup QB hasn't shown that he has any sort of accuracy and I feel like out secondary will take advantage and play lockdown.

Their offense doesn't hit double digits without a couple TOs in the redzone, because, yes, our defense IS that good.

I think this year will be the opposite of last year:

Last year - Offense started out as strength of team, won us close games. End of season Defense gets it together and starts firing on all cylinders.

This year - Defense started as our strength, won us close games. End of season Offense gets it together and starts firing on all cylinders.

In regards to Villanova, avoid looking at the score of the Maine game.

Instead, look here. Defense and turnovers ruled the day.
