My guess: no chance. He survives.

My guess too. I certainly hope I'm wrong.

No. C'mon. No. That would go against everything that we've learned up to this point.

A bad enough couple of weeks that he probably will get only a one-year extension. Problem is, next year's schedule includes 3 possible wins, and that would be the sign of improvement justifying a longer extension.

He either gets a 3-5 year extension or is fired. No coach can go on a one year contract...but wait we have JK....

Frankly, I'd be disappointed if Bailiff were to be fired mid-season now. That would be like pulling the ripcord five feet from impact. Comical but tragic futility.

I say we enjoy the notoriety of the bottom at this point (How bad can it really get?), have a few stiff drinks, and get a posse together after the season.

Because the players deserve a second chance to reboot with new leadership.

In all seriousness, I agree with you. But as a collective, we have shown that we don't care about such things.

Today's result was within my range of expectation, albeit at the lower end. It will help contribute to Rice letting him go after the season but I really can't see him going sooner. His past successes will buy him that much.

Given the last 11 seasons and the decisions within, I would be flabbergasted if he got fired after this game.

What is the cheapest alternative? There's your answer. If the buyout is larger because of a mid-season termination, then fully expect him to keep his seat for the remainder of the year.

I don’t think there’s any chance we hear anything either way. I’d prefer to see a decisive firing Monday to tell the market Rice still cares and we need to do better. By market I mean donors, students, alumni, local fans, the media, potential coaches, and potential recruits.

Exactly my feeling.

Ah, but see, I have no confidence in Rice being inclined to monetize such things. Many arguments could have been made over the years that the damage to the program and The Institute exceeded the buyout cost at various points. However, I see no evidence that any influential economist at Rice (or anyone else, really) has taken up trying to make this case.

Penny wise..., etc., etc. I don't think there is any sort of unified concept at Rice of what the program is worth and what abject futility costs us.

Tell you what, abject futility sure isn't costing Bailiff anything, presuming that he intends to hang it up after leaving this devastation in his wake.

I can only think of twice ever a separation has happened before the end of the season. Hagan in 1970 and he finished the season and Chris Huston, the first women's soccer coach. Actually, Tommy Suitts also, if i remember.

Clearly a message to "Rice Nation" would be helpful, unfortunately the entire rest of the world has bought into the pub that Bailiff is a great guy (ok, true) and see what he has done at "poor Rice"-WOO HOO 4 bowls baby. Reminds me of that person we have all had casual acquaintance with that seems decent, but when you talk to someone who deals with them much more, they tell you if you only knew. Then you find out and oh my.......

The magic number is 7, as in 7 losses. Until that time someone somewhere will still believe Rice can win the division, win the conference, or at bare minimum become bowl eligible at 6 - 6.

Coach knows this it, players know he is lame duck and want to get on to new coach. Just wish coach would announce his resignation at end of year and someone else is in place Thanksgiving. Baliff stayed too long, it happens. As a coach you want to fix it, but not going to happen. Time to go, Coach, do right thing and it will not be ugly, you make 100 of thousands more than the high school coach you set out to be, so ride on out.
A couple years from now they will bring you back, for reunions,if there is football, because do not know if next guy can do much better.

The AD/Bailiff will also try and spin 5-7 as improvement and "wait until next year."

The problem is Bailiff needs a new contract, so any extension and we're stuck with him another 3-5 years no matter what (if JK is still the AD).
