Question for you guys. If the new stadium doesn't work out, is there a way to make it work at Regions Park? It currently holds about 8,500. Could you get an additional 20-25k temporary seating (similar to how Hoover does the Hoover Met for football) in left field and maybe outside the outfield wall in center field and right field?

UAB will not be contributing funds to a stadium not in campus. End of discussion there. That said we are not allowed to build a stadium on campus anyway until after some funerals have taken place or we have leverage in the way of let us build it or rot in jail.

AB: Wonder if UAB and the owners of our new soccer franchise could possibly work something out.....

Regions is just too small and no one likes the idea. Could it be configured to something cool? Sure but the capacity would be much less than what we are averaging. You could squeeze 22-25K. To do anything more would require major construction and at that point better to build a new stadium.

The way I see things regarding a playing venue, there are presently 4 main options -- #1 Legion Field as the only EXISTING sufficiently large venue now; #2 the BJCC open air medium size limited use stadium, #3 a UAB built OCS and #4 a MPF to expand the city's convention capabilities including those for sports. The last 3 all require new money be placed on the table and a commitment made to keep it coming.

The thinking that a baseball field / stadium can be adapted for UAB football is based on belief that interest in UAB football is temporary and will soon fall back to its "less than 20,000 level". I, on the other hand, believe that this interest has only just begun to flourish and will grow for the rest of this century (as the alumni base is expanded and becomes wealthier). The future of football is in the urban universities and these are the coming powers in the sport as people of means reclaim the inner cities (gentrification?) across this nation.

No matter which of the above 3 is decided upon to replace Legion Field, it is required that growth of UAB football is considered certain.

Ain't gonna happen. That venue was built for baseball and baseball only. Everybody knows that an on campus stadium is the way to go here. But won't happen under current Draconian rule.

Regions FIELD (not Park) is NOT an option for football. Period. There is no way the city will allow it. As is it is now, once the Barons season starts UAB can no longer use it because they don't want additional wear on the turf.

Regions Field is not an option. Period. There is no conceivable way to add enough temporary seating to make it a viable option. Furthermore, there is no way to add enough permanent seating without destroying the charm of one of the best minor league venues in the nation.

The Hoover Met is already a less-than-ideal venue for high school football. Why would anyone want to replicate that AND destroy a beautiful downtown baseball stadium in the process?
