RE: Backers of new UAB football stadium hope to get project back on track
It's a "done deal" when shovel meets dirt. Until then, all options (including the MPF) remain on the table. I expect some clarification after the new Council and Mayor have had a chance to settle into their new jobs and begin to form their own new alliances with each other. The first indication of such will be the election of a new Council President since the old one lost.

How much influence will the new Mayor have on this new Council, and vice versa? As we found with the change of national administration, the fall out from the change can be significant.

As I recall the deal, it was 1/3 UL, 1/3 metro and 1/3 Popa John Corp. (The corp HQ is in Louisville)

FWIW: When PJ Corp bought into the NFL, it dropped its sponsorship of the B'ham Bowl game, but left its pizza making facility at Legion Field.

Could? They can do anything they decide to.

"Should they?" is another question entirely. I'm not big on extortion. UAB would, quite properly, have very little say in what the BJCC does. This would be a city/county owned project. If you were renting an apartment, what would you say if your landlord hit you up for money to renovate the place?

1. We're kinda the ones clamoring for it the most.

2. I hope we can add another home game + host bowl game + another UAB event.

I still posit that UAB could appeal to Woodfin's base without spending many actual dimes, but provide something with a dollar value, by providing special scholarships reserved for Birmingham residents for degrees in venue management. Construction management for locals working on the project who could get their degrees after the project is finished would also be a nice add. The BJCC can hold X number of jobs for those management graduates. It's higher wage jobs for Woodfin voters, which is what he campaigned on. UAB can put a market value on it the education, but it only costs UAB the wholesale price. Win-win for everyone.

I think that's a fine idea, whether the degrees are in Venue Management or UAB ponies up scholarships for deserving Birmingham students in general. That sort of horse trading makes good sense to me.

"Done deal" under William Bell. There's a new mayor in town.

He held his transition presser today. He had a clearer message on business relationships and future projects. Nothing definitive.

He's gotten Ret. Marine General Krulak, the former President of Birmingham Southern, and Bobbie Knight, a former VP of Alabama Power, as his transition co-chairs. I don't know much about Ms. Knight, other than that you don't become a VP at Alabama Power by being ineffective and that she is a "lifelong Birmingham resident". I have nothing but respect for Krulak.

I take this as a good sign.

Ed Fields, his campaign chairman, is transition coordinator, which is unsurprising.

Krulak is a great pick.

The article mentions he doesn't take office until Nov 28th so I wouldn't expect anything new on the stadium until after then.

She was an Alabama Power flack when I was still in news media. She married a guy who played for the Falcons, so she's not anti-football, or at least wasn't back in the day.

UAB will not be contributing funds to a stadium not in campus. End of discussion there. That said we are not allowed to build a stadium on campus anyway until after some funerals have taken place or we have leverage in the way of let us build it or rot in jail.
