Ranking Virginia Football Teams
There's a thread over on ODU's site discussing the top 10 ranking of VA FB teams. VT is #1, and JMU is #2. UVA is #3, and ODU...well, check out the discussion. It's actually pretty reasonable (so far), with the exception of the to be expected ODU homers.

RE: Ranking Virginia Football Teams
If we were to play VT and UVA 10 times each this season, I suspect we'd go 2-8 against VT and 6-4 against UVA.

RE: Ranking Virginia Football Teams
I dunno. UVA could be (and I stress "could") turning a corner of sorts in Year 2 under Mendenhall. Their win at Boise was/is very impressive. BSU isn't a top 25 program anymore, but flying way out there at that altitude on a Friday night and kicking their hind parts is still pretty impressive. I'm not convinced the Dukes would go out there and beat them - might as well by 19 pts (sample size of 1 I realize...and not sure how good BSU is anyway).

Still a lot of question marks on UVA. They are favored to defeat Duke at home this weekend by a field goal. If they win, they likely will be favored to win at UNCheat the following week and then again at home vs BC in Week 8. Great opportunity ahead for them to get to 6-1 thru 7 games. Week 9 is a very winnable game at a reeling Pitt team too. Their November will be brutal though...home vs GT (though UVA has had its way with GT at home over the last 20+ years for the most part), at UofL, at Miami, vs VPI&SU.

Their defense is pretty good, but now their QB and WR's are starting to click more. We'll see.

I believe until further notice 1-Hokies, 2-Dukes, 3-Frenchies makes sense.

Yeah, given 10 games each against the following teams:
VT: 2-8
UVA: 4-6
UR: 6-4 (or maybe 7-3.)
VMI: 9-0-1 (When I was at JMU from 88-94, we used to have our hands full with them)
Liberty: 7-3 (for now)
ODU: 5-5
W&M: 7-3
NSU: 9-1

No way this team would ever lose to NSU.

Not going to lose to ODU five times, either. l'll take the seven wins against UR

I think you're a little off. Nothing wrong with homerism but in 10 games I think you'll see something more like this:

VT: 0-10
UVA: 3-7
Bitchmond: 7-3
VMI: 10-0
Liberty: 6-4
ODU: 6-4
W&M: 8-2
NSU: 10-0

RE: Ranking Virginia Football Teams
Right now, if we were to win 2 games against VT, it would likely be the first (by surprise) and the last (after they rattled off 8 wins in a row). I think the O-line inexperience, the injuries and constantly having to re-work new guys into the rotation because of guys coming off suspensions are wreaking havoc with consistency on offense. I fully expect us to be more fluid in a few weeks, more like the offense we are used to.

Not sure I see us w/ the advantage over UVA, certainly not for 10 games in a row. Any one game, yes. If we theoretically reset to beginning of the year parameters after each game, I could see us faring well. Otherwise, their talent and depth and inevitable attrition would win out imho. I don't see ODU's talent or perceived quality depth being a factor against us, even for 10 games.

RE: Ranking Virginia Football Teams
For fun, here is what Massey is giving for JMU vs the FBS schools on a neutral field based on this year's results (and probably a very small amount of pre-season / last year weighting still).

I took a screen shot of the first 7-game series that the system gave me. Obviously each time you hit 'Sim' you will get a different result.
:
:
:
Also Sagarin PREDICTOR (through 9/30/17) shows neutral field predictions of:
VT -16.5 vs JMU
UVA -1.5 vs JMU
JMU -12.5 vs Old Dominion
JMU -26.5 vs Liberty

This year's liberty team isn't that good. We're at least 7-3 against them in this scenario and that's if they battle their asses off in them.

They may have beaten a crappy Baylor team (more on baylor than LU) but they lost to Jacksonville State in a blowout and at home to Saint Francis.

Pretty close. I'd go +1 on VT, RU, W&M & Liberty
VT 1-9
UVA: 3-7
ODU: 6-4
Liberty 7-3
RU 8-2 (they have no defense, don't think they'll make playoffs)
W&M: 9-1 (they're gonna finish with a losing record, like last year)
VMI: 10-0
NSU: 10-0
Hampton: 10-0

You're right, they aren't good. More like 9 - 1, just barely ahead of NSU.

The computer results are unfortunately just computer results. It's really too bad that ODU and JMU aren't able to play this year...although a defeat to a lowly FCS team would probably explode a few heads over on the ODU board.

The more rational ODU FB fans understand there's not that much difference between a low-to-mid-level G5 and a top FCS program, but there are always a couple knuckleheads who think the FBS label makes their team invincible against FCS teams. I call it the "Alabama Syndrome." JMU experienced that sort of delusional thinking as expressed by a number of the ECU faithful this year, and with the SMU fans two seasons ago. It's a prideful ignorance that lead G5 fans into thinking that because their team is FBS (aka Alabama) by comparison all FCS teams must be smaller, weaker, slower, less skilled, poorly equipped and coached, and just a cupcake "W" on the schedule.

I believe it's inevitable that ODU and JMU play an annual FB game that rotates between our two stadiums. It's a natural rivalry, and it has the potential of being a far more competitive matchup than the annual VT/UVA game. I also think it's the kind of rivalry game that makes for a natural season ending contest (or at least Thanksgiving holiday matchup). Hopefully the stars will align sooner than later, and an annual ODU/JMU FB game will come to be. Both fan bases deserve such a contest.

Regarding the bold. I firmly believe we'd be ranked in the top 10 of a poll inclusive of G5 schools and FCS schools. NDSU would as well. There would be a serious drop-off to the next FCS team, which would be around #50.
