Lawsuit to follow. The courts will end up deciding the extent to which employers can limit free speech.

I think it's a private school so if that happens, that coach will lose might lose his job and the school will settle out of court.

And what if he forced you to take off your uniform in front of everyone?
If I had an undershirt and gym shortson under I don't see the big deal?

Are you saying he ordered the students to strip nakedin public? If so that would probably be a violation but thats not what happened is it?

I think it's borderline, depends on what was on under their pads. I think he would have been better served to tell them to head back to the locker room and take off their uniforms there.

I think the better punishment would have been to bench them and give them the opportunity to re-assess their Anthem stance each game going forward.

Sit for the anthem and you get a DNP-Coach's Decision in the box score.

Coach is the boss, boss said not, kids didn't learn, boss fired kids. Not that hard to understand. More than anything, hopefully the kids learned a lesson.

I think this was a private school so he may be in the clear but if this is a public school, I believe he would be violating federal law.

Oh this outta be good, nearly every time you site "federal law" it's an adventure... So tell me which law?

Acccording to the article, he made them take their uniform pants off. Nowadays, most kids were paded spandex shorts underneath their pants but not all. Some just wear their jocks.

The coach has nothing to worry about in regards to his job. He started the school he coaches for.

In what state?

Also, quick point.... The kids were kicked off a voluntary activity at school, not kicked out of school.

Not likely. This was a private school. So it's just like an employer-employee situation basically. Employers are not the government in this case so they can limit your free speech as they so choose.

Also, in right-to-work states they can fire you for pretty much anything they wish.

Public schools on the other hand cannot limit these protests as it will run afoul of the SCOTUS in the West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette case.

I agree here..

Quote:Sit for the anthem and you get a DNP-Coach's Decision in the box score.

Here I say one warning (single game), two times (three games), third time (off the team)

Not even a private school. It's basically a sports program for homeschooled kids.

"You can't fire me, I quit." It was lame then and it's lame now.

You pull that from your many years of practicing law?

They were not being forced to say the pledge, to sing the anthem, or salute the flag. They were being asked not to protest others doing by taking a knee. They could have simply stood and looked at their feet

Want to try again?

Mindsets like that are why young adults break rules with impunity.

These kids knew the rule, broke the rule and the coach has to punish them or the coach carries no authority and then in the future either these kids or others will break rules knowing the rules carry no weight.

Rules without consistency in enforcement aren't rules.

Shameful. The coach could have handled it better. He could have used it as an opportunity to teach the kids about freedome of speech. Now he just brought a bunch of negative coverage to this school and made it all about him.

I think he did teach them about free speech...

"Do it on your time, not my dime."

Learning that an employer can fire you for free speech is a valuable lesson.

Too many idiots believe that the right to free speech means that they can say anything anywhere and no one can do anything about it...which is flat out wrong...just ask the Dixie Chicks.

the government can not limit your free speech but someone who pays your wages can as can the public in general by not buying your music in the case of the Dixie Chicks.
