It comes with massive responsibility and consequences. If the worry is your QB will crumble mentally because a coach raises his voice to him, I don't want that QB leading the team. Some players actually respond very well to negative reinforcement. That's part of coaching dynamics...how to motivate individuals to their personality. It's not like Carey's hurling personal insults. They're not dating. He yelled. Probably put his arm around him later and said I believe in you and let's go get em next week. Football.

This has been addressed numerous times on the board. You're spot on. I'm not sure if the people with this viewpoint have never played a competitive sport (especially football) or they simply hate Carey. People posted the same garbage after the EIU game and were flat out lying about what they saw. Carey put his arm around Santa and had a long, calm conversation with him after a pick in that game. I honestly don't understand how people post some of the stuff they do on this board.

I did not remember seeing Carey "lay into" Santa after the int, so I looked at it again. Start at around the 3:00 minute mark

You can draw your own conclusion; I see Carey is upset and a touch angry, but I don't see him laying into Santa. We don't know what was said, but I have seen many coaches laying into a player and that is not it.

I have many times made my position on Carey clear in years past. I have also said I like what I am seeing between Carey and the payers this year and it is showing on the field. I am still not a Carey lover; however, my perception is that Carey learned from his mistakes and has matured as a coach. Most are willing to give Santa (and others in the past) chances to learn and mature as a player; isn't Carey entitled to the same thing? I see what Carey did with Santa after the int totally appropriate.

Alright, that is the first time I've seen that drive as I was not watching on Saturday night. All the posters calling for Huff to run the ball there obviously were not paying attention. Huff took himself out of the game for a rest the play before. Huff didn't even have the last carry, Jones did. So the coaches couldn't just keep feeding Huff as he was not in the game. The play call might not have been the wisest, but the throw was not good. It had no chance to be completed. Santa has to learn (and I'm sure he will) to throw that ball away.

I saw it live and I'm not denying that it happened. But I'm sure Carey wanted to talk to Santa and figure out why he made such a bad decision. Emotions were running high. I'd rather have Carey be passionate about it rather than shrugging and standing there in silence. Go back and watch the players reaction around Carey when they beat Nebraska. I'm just tired of uninformed people circulating this "Carey is so mean" nonsense based on him having an animated conversation with a football player.

MD, you're a troll.

Football coaches yell. That's not a shock. No one (except for a handful of people) on this board know what Carey's relationship with his players is like. Outside looking in, everything seems fine and it's not for us to judge anyways. I am sure Carey was frustrated and Santa was disappointed, but they will both learn from this because they have proven that they are good at what they do. Anyone that has played a sport at a high enough level understands that, that was a growing moment.

* Santacaterina shows promise, but his poor throwing mechanics will be a hindrance to his development

* This might be the best defense NIU has put on the gridiron in a decade. We are well coached and we have recruited well (seemingly). I mentioned "might" because it is still early and it remains to be seen how our defensive staff reacts to the adjustments opposing offenses make as more tape on our scheming becomes available

* Handing down a mere one game suspension is embarrassing to our program. The dirty play was caught vividly on camera on a nationally televised game. There is a big difference between a cheap shot and a dirty play. A cheap shot gets you a one game suspension; a dirty play should merit much more. You don't mess with someone's eyes.

* To illustrate my point, Danny Trevathan got two games from the NFL. To me, that was a classic example of a cheap shot. I didn't find that nearly as egregious as what our kid did to Penny.

* Our special teams are awful and they will cost this team victories if they are not shored up. Is there not a kid on this roster that can kick a football all the way to the end zone? He doesn't have to have pinpoint accuracy - just kick it a long way. There has to be someone

* We are strong and athletic on the line of scrimmage. I don't feel as if this Huskie team would be overmatched physically by many teams. Kudos to our strength and conditioning coaches

* Love the old school white uniforms. I sort of liked the numbers on the helmets, however I would prefer to see the "NIU" for branding purposes, particularly when it is a nationally televised game against a ranked opponent

* The camera caught Coach Carey laying into Santacaterina after his untimely interception at the end of the game. What kind of a man lashes out at his nineteen year old inexperienced quarterback after the kid makes an ill-advised throw? There is a time and place to get on a kid, but it is NOT in heat of moment when the young man is devastated because he feels like he just let down his entire team. There was a possibility that NIU might need Santacaterina to come back on the field and win the game. Breaking his spirit isn't going to do a bit of good. Coach Carey is a punk, he'll always be a punk, and this program needs to be rid of him

Well, I listened to the game and the NIu
sideline guy said that Carey was emphasizing positives to Santa C and that he was still having a great game and was coaching him up while explaining what he had to do and what he did wrong. This from a guy who was standing there on the sideline. Sorry, but your thoughts don't hold water here. Haters gonna hate.

sportsfan it was actually caught on camera lol

Cameras don't catch audio. So, you're calling that radio guy a liar? Huh?

If you are talking about our radio sideline guy his name is Andy Garcia. We are blessed with a great team of radio broadcasters!

Bill Baker - play by play
Mark Lindo - commentator
Andy Garcia - sidelines

I live in Columbus, Ohio and I enjoy the NIU announcing team more than the tOSU team

It will be a sad day when Bill Baker decides to retire

Football is a sport played by tough young men and coached by tough men. They do not need to be coddled.

You guys have a well coached team. Interesting as I just re-watched the game, out west generally the Pac 12 officiating gets the comments, MWC officiating is ok, usually, however those MAC officials called an extremely tight/petty game. Curious as to your thoughts on that subject?

Completely different team than the one we faced last year- expect good things this season!

Yep that is a good officiating crew,I thought they were on top of things and overall do a pretty darn good job. I know a lot of times home team can expect the bias, and that didn't happen here.
