RE: Death Penalty for UNC?
1993, the year the fake classes started was interesting. UNC won the title. Runnerup was Michigan whose trip has been vacated because of cheating involving their fab 4 freshmen. Kansas, with current UNC coach Roy Williams as coach, lost to UNC in the semis. Kentucky, with Rick Pitino as coach, fresh off their own probation when Eddie Sutton was in charge, lost to Michigan in the semis.

I just don’t think you guys should get your hopes up.

It would be like if the NFL found out the Panthers has been dressing up and using players in secret (dressing a guy up in someone else’s uniform) who had been kicked out of the league for violations ... they wouldn’t kick the Panthers out of the league.

"...The university that for so long had talked about the “Carolina Way” — which included competing in sports with honor and integrity — discovered it was, in large part, a self-serving myth.
With its reputation in tatters, the school should have acted swiftly and sternly to punish its sports teams and coaches. Its refusal to do so means the NCAA is the only remaining hope of making UNC pay the price for nearly 20 years of wrongdoing."

If nothing is done to UNC, all school's that have suffered financial loss for the last 20 years because of penalties placed on them by the NCAA should appeal for a class action suite against the NCAA demanding that the schools be reimbursed by the NCAA.

1. Folt personally intervened/begged with the NCAA to push the announcement away from Friday due to the kick off of the capital campaign.
2. Expect the report on Tuesday.
3. Nobody really knows what's coming. Or if they do it is limited to only the top 3 folks (Folt, Blouin, Cunningham).
4. There's resolve within South Building to fight any unduly harsh penalties but it is not limitless. If the penalties are not too onerous we will likely just accept them

#1 seems obvious, but it's hard to imagine UNC begging the NCAA to push it off. How they responded, the back-handed way it came off like the NCAA was causing a burden to the school because of the notification window and scheduling...that doesn't read like a school thankful it got a break...

...which makes #4 seem a bit off. As in, UNC will fight if there's anything more than a slap on the wrist. And maybe that's eventually taking some punishment, but making the NCAA flush out their rationale to every letter until it gets what it wants.

Because, compared to UNC, they were.

In that case it's ok to have this on display outside the stadium:

The Fraudulent Four of 1993?

If the classes started in 1993, and the title game was in March, please tell me how that affects anything?

The UNC matter was academic fraud and not contained just within the athletic department and select administrators. Faculty knew about it and went along, if not cooperated, with it. Others ignored it, or were late in formally complaining due to perceived risks if they spoke-up earlier. I expect the student body was generally aware as well. It was fairly blatant considering the scope of the operation.

From the article.

According to excellent reporting by the Raleigh News & Observer and a series of outside investigations, a large number of UNC’s athletes from 1993 to 2011 received high grades for classes that never met and didn’t include any tests or homework.

The only requirement for the classes was an end-of-semester assignment that was sometimes graded by a school secretary, who gave high marks for papers that she knew were plagiarized, unrelated to the class topic, recycled from other classes or written mostly by someone other than the student.

In other words, those old jokes about "Underwater Basket Weaving" class isn't too far from the truth.....

RE: Death Penalty for UNC?
The unfortunate thing is that the teams are all school teams, and so to play on the teams you have to be a student at the school, and to do that then there are supposed to be all sorts of rules about being "academically eligible", what a student can and cannot receive, what a coach can and cannot do, and so on.

That's the unfortunate thing.

RE: Death Penalty for UNC?
The report is expected to arrive tomorrow morning.

The optics of doing these things on a Friday so that there isn't major press to quickly respond, and, in turn, giving schools a multiple day buffer so they can collect themselves and generate formal responses is pathetic. The NCAA is utterly impotent.
