Why aren't they just dropping them from planes? Don't they do that in African aid situations?

Now you are on a different argument. I'm sure food could be air dropped to more remote locations or to people that desperately need it. Hell it could already be taking place for all we know. The thread was about the Jones Act and libs trying to claim Trump is too wrapped up in a pissing match with the NFL to properly respond to PR. That isn't the case.

But no one has explained why he waited to waive the Jones Act. On top of that, why did they wait 8 days before assigning a 3 star general to the situation?

They knew for at least 3 days before the storm that PR was going to take a direct hit. They must have known that PR had bad infrastructure right?

They saw what two previous storms did. Why weren't they prepared?

Some folks seem to forget there were two previous hurricanes being dealt with. Anything to complain against Trump though.....

Trump said he was prepared to do the job. The number of hurricanes isn't relevant. He should have been prepared. Just another failure adding to a long list of fail. 05-stirthepot

Quote:10,000 shipping containers at the port the MORNING AFTER the Jones Act was lifted. Do you think they magically showed up in a few hours, or can you maybe reason that there have been supplies arriving since Irma hit and the ports were possibly near capacity since they seem to have trouble getting supplies from the port to parts of the country.

Hey genius, it takes more than a couple days or even week or two to recover from the impact of a storm the size of Irma. You think they should have completely rebuilt PR between the storms?

Of course it takes time. It's going to take months for these people to even have any semblance of a normal life.

What I am asking is why did it take so long to start the recovery?

Still waiting for someone to give an answer.

FFS, let's a little common sense. Even if the Act had been waived earlier, then what? The ports were closed. Once the ports were open and the supplies offloaded, the supplies could not leave the port. Why? Because there was no fuel for the trucks and no drivers to actually drive the trucks if there was any fuel. All this stuff takes time. Folks blaming Trump for all that just partisan hacks playing politics. Hell, I don't like Trump and didn't vote for him and even I can see that.

Why increase the flow of ships to ports that are already backed up? It's called logistics.

Why the **** have we assigned a 3 star general to PR? When did this become a military problem? If the military is assisting, why the **** does it take a 3* to get supplies organized and shipped and assist with recovery?

I didn't take very long to "start the recovery" It started on the island as soon as the storm passed. Step one is always to assess the situation.

Stop acting like the US somehow failed to help PR in a timely manner.

The answer is simple. If he had waived it earlier then we wouldn't be questioning his decision.

It's like the husband who's wife is found murdered. If he refuses a polygraph then people start asking questions. If he agrees to eliminate himself as a suspect then the investigation moves on.

Trump should have waived the Jones act immediately and then tweeted. " I have waived the Jones Act so that ships can aid PR as soon as possible. #MAGA

RE: Why did Trump wait almost two weeks to lift the Jones Act?
There was no need to lift the Jones Act until there was suitable harbor facilities available to offload the good they were bringing.

Because communications was wiped out on the island nobody, not the PR government nor US government understood the true scope of the damage. In some areas they didn't have communications until the military took them satellite phones. Once they were able to do an effective size-up of the situation they switched from a sea based relief response with the USS Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group to a land based relief response.

There was no need to wait almost two weeks to live the Jones Act either.

What would lifting the Jones Act then have accomplished Fit? The supplies couldn't get in, if they would have gotten them in the interior roads were closed, and they had no communications so they wouldn't have known what to send where.

This is just you looking for something to bash Trump over and quite frankly the fact that you are doing so makes you look extremely petty and stupid.

There was no benefit in lifting it earlier either. Like most good libs, you wanted something symbolic, rather than prudently measured and effective response.

It wasn't "almost two weeks" either. The storm hit on Sept 20. The Jones Act was waived on the morning of the 28th. That's the 8th morning from landfall, and certainly less than "almost two weeks" after the storm passed.

Liberal exaggeration.

It was known the storm was going to hit PR directly for at least 3 days before the hurricane. Why even wait?

Again, you want nothing more than a symbolic gesture. Ports are full of cargo the day after Jones act was lifted. It didn't magically appear overnight.

You faux outrage is beyond ******* stupid.

What good would it have done if he had lifted it when you wanted? Just once answer a GD question with an answer, not another question. WHAT GOOD WOULD IT HAVE DONE?

We've told you already A. there were no open ports to offload the goods B. If there were a port open the interior roads were closed so you couldn't distribute the goods C. There was no communications with most of the island so you wouldn't have known what to send where.

It would have perhaps stopped people from questioning the president on this. Now he has to waste time explaining yet again why he did this.

It goes back to what I said before he was elected. The man makes too many unforced errors.

Every left-leaning outlet is going to question everything he does. He needs to learn to ignore them. Lefties in this country have become so brain dead and ignorant it isn't even funny anymore. It's just pathetic to think that people so stupid somehow ended up being blessed enough to live in a country where they can survive despite their stupidity.

In other words it would have been a symbolic, meaningless gesture that would have had no direct effect on the actual relief efforts. The standard leftist response......all show, no go.

One of the worst things that can happen in a disaster situation is the uncontrolled influx of relief supplies. It takes away manpower needed elsewhere to deal with them at the staging point, and because there is no direct control you often end up with supplies you don't need that takes up valuable space that could be used for supplies you do need. I've been on deployments where they actually hauled off to the dump complete loads of unneeded supplies simply to make space for what was truly needed, so instead of helping it actually made the situation worse.

I literally explained all this a couple of days ago in another thread, including why there was a need for a barge system and why not waiving the Jones Act prior to ports being repaired wouldn't have been a bad idea... and downright dangerous.

You're just repeating what you hear on CNN for the sake of it, and not listening when someone who literally deals with this daily explains it to you.

Additionally, let's say President Trump waived the Jones Act days ago... it wouldn't have helped and would have caused epic confusion, congestion, and possible injuries/loss of life at the ports as a large number of vessels all scrambled to drop off supplies and pick up survivors. Then you would have railed on Trump for making a brash decision that further hampered efforts to help PR.

Why can't you just once, sit back, STFU, and understand that thousands of people are doing as much as they can to assist? That there was a very good reason the Jones Act wasn't hastily waived. The fact that the supplies are now safely and effectively entering ports should tell you that things were done the correct way. But no, you have to be an angry little lib that wants to throw a fit and use something like a natural disaster to levy shots at a President you don't like. Sad. Absolutely sad, I kind of feel sorry for you sometimes.

With all the real stuff to criticize Trump on, its astounding how the left always seems to pick on things where there is nothing legitimate to criticize-Russian collusion, Melania's shoes....

Almost makes you wonder if CNN is really run by Breitbart, trying to make Democrats look stupid.

As if they needed any outside help with that.
