Nike hit with a subpoena yesterday. Adidas hired Debevoise to do an internal investigation on Wednesday. Nike will hire a similar firm. Houses will be cleaned, and the guilty parties are going to be beating down the door to flip. I predict an avalanche of indictments.

Well, except for that FBI logo thing...
The real twist is these are publicly traded companies doing the "bribing" of players. It's hard to have your books audited when you are transferring funds to people and not reporting it. That's where the feds come in. The players should have to declare the funds as income and pay taxes.
I heard on the radio, so not sure if true, that Addidas was actually trying to run this stuff through accounting at first, then went the bagman route.
I know that the college athletics angle of this is what draws headlines, but from a law enforcement perspective, this is no different than any case of embezzlement of company funds.

Bribery, Tax Evasion, Money Laundering, Embezzlement
This is going to be deep and wide. This is basically organized crime.

...and to think the FBI would STILL not know about this, had it not been for Marty Glazer's failed Ponzi scheme. Funny how loose lips get when serious jail time is involved... (I want to cut a deal...)

RE: Good news for Tribe hoops recruiting?
Fallout from the scandal could plausibly result in scenarios that don't change or exacerbate W&M's basketball strategy resources mismatch.
In one instance, if professional basketball migrated to the professional baseball model, players leaving high school could choose to skip the academic charade of the one-half and done era and be paid for playing, depending on where their talent lands them, major or minor league basketball.
Some colleges might benefit. They would no longer be on the hook for providing athletic scholarships to athletes who had no interest in scholarship. W&M remains stuck with its limited budget, outdated facilities, scheduling challenges, quaint notion that the players perform academically like other students, lack of Ivy League cachet, and even more damaging lack of Ivy League grade inflation, competing for a smaller pool of players with better resourced Power 5, Big East, A-10, and CAA schools.
In the second instance the majority of minor league basketball would continue to be played at the college level, but the colleges would be responsible for paying those generating revenues -- the players. W&M basketball generates little revenue. W&M can't afford COA so paying players is a non-starter. The "championship experience" for men's basketball becomes more, not less elusive.
A third possibility is a hybrid of the first two. These scenarios may or may not come to pass. The NCAA industrial complex has weathered all kinds of storms that should have had an Irma like effect on its facade of Power 5 amateurism. For W&M the status quo or changes to the status quo leave men's basketball with the same strategy resources mismatch.
It's hard to believe this mismatch is actually what College leadership desires, but it would be encouraging to know beyond the aspirational increased funding sought in the ten year plan what its vision of the ideal athletic competitive landscape looks like. If leadership could have it like it wanted it, how would it be?
Donor funding isn't all that's missing. The future construct for where the funding is spent competing shouldn't leave men's basketball at a perpetual disadvantage.

Much of this mess would disappear if the NBA adapted baseball's rule where players can't sign with MLB
teams until they've finished three seasons at their university. Almost all of the elite players--the one and dones--would never go to college and would either sign with NBA teams if the NBA permitted it or
go play in Europe for three years.

Folks,
there would be an active minor league structure for basketball if it was economically viable. It isn't viable. My guess is that eventually the NCAA will do something similar to baseball and make it three academic years. When that happens you will see a lot of high school kids go play in Europe or Asia until they are NBA eligible. I wouldn't be surprised to see kids drop out of high school to do this.

The NCAA won't be doing anything. Major league baseball draft rules are set up by MLB, and the only reason basketball players don't go directly to the pros anymore is that the NBA changed their draft rules. With the expansion of the G-League, I wouldn't be surprised to see the NBA go the opposite direction and drop their age/experience requirement altogether.
