OT: Four College Assistant Coaches Charged in Corruption Scheme
This is big!
Quote:The Federal Bureau of Investigation have charged several college coaches in conjunction with a corruption scheme, reports NBC News.

Oklahoma State assistant Lamont Evans, Auburn assistant Chuck Person, Emanuel "Book" Richardson of Arizona and USC assistant Tony Bland have been charged in the corruption scheme.

According to court documents, Evans, Richardson, and Bland received benefits in "excess of $10,000 under a Federal program involving a grant, contract, subsidy, loan, guarantee, insurance and other form of Federal Assistance."

Evans, Richardson, and Bland face a combined 11 charges, including conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, wire fraud conspiracy and travel act conspiracy.

Authorities say that Person agreed to accept $50,000 in bribes from a cooperating witness for the government in exchange for using his position at Auburn to steer student-athletes to retain the services of an agent.

Person is being charged with six counts, including solicitation of bribes, bribery conspiracy, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

"Moreover, many such coaches have enormous influence over the student-athletes who play for them, in particular with respect to guiding those student-athletes through the process of selecting agents and other advisers when they prepare to leave college and enter the NBA," the complaints said.

Evans joined Brad Underwood's staff at Oklahoma State in the 2016 offseason after four seasons at South Carolina under Frank Martin.

Richardson has been an assistant on Sean Miller's staff for 11 seasons, including two at Xavier before Miller was hired by Arizona. Person, who led Auburn to the Elite Eight as a player in 1986, was hired by Bruce Pearl in the spring of 2014. Bland has been a USC assistant since the 2013-14 season.

A press conference is set for noon on Tuesday to detail the arrests and the charges facing the coaches.

The U.S Attorney for the Southern District of New York says that federal criminal charges have been brought against 10 people.

The college basketball coaches, managers, financial advisors, and representatives of a major international sportswear company will also face charges.

The head of the sportswear company is Adidas head of sports marketing James Gatto, who is accused of paying high school players to go to Adidas sponsored schools for the benefit of signing with the company at a later time.

I wonder if these assistant coaches were acting independent of the schools who employed them? Bruce Pearl at Auburn already has a history with the NCAA. I'm sure Arizona, Auburn, Oklahoma State, and USC are hoping the buck stops at just those assistants.

I wonder if this is the final death blow to Pitino's career? He weathered the storm of the prostitution scandal but this might be too much for the Louisville administration to stomach. Pitino is either involved with the corruption or has very little institutional control over his assistant's activities.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

The saddest thing really is this isn't that surprising. We know it was going on, especially in Louisville's case, but now it's been found out.

Well, maybe this investigation will decimate Louisville's coaching staff and recruiting class and leave them venerable for an upset.

This story was the lead story on my local news sports section tonight. Apparently, there are more schools/arrests in the works. Likely other coaches / ADs soiling their pants right now.

The NCAA has known about this for a while, is my guess. If they wanted to suspend players for their involvement, they likely could have/would have done it already. If anything, Louisville should have the death penalty coming its way, especially after the prosititution scandal of two years ago.

According to ESPN, the NCAA only found out about this FBI investigation on Tuesday morning. Additional to Louisville, the University of Miami has been added to the investigation. Because of the surprise FBI announcement, I doubt the NCAA has had time to investigate and clear or suspend players implicated in this investigation; or if they are privy to the FBI information accumulated so far. A lot of players could be declared ineligible over the course of this season; if the player or his families accepted bribes.

Awww that's cute. I assume you also believe that unicorns shoot rainbows out of their rear end too? The NCAA is one of the most morally corrupt institutions in the United States. They make billions of dollars off of athletes that will never see a penny of that because the NCAA wants them to be amateurs so that they don't have to pay them. If you think they didn't know what was going on, they are duping you.

I am not saying the NCAA is unaware of the operating practices by some of the major programs around the country. I am saying they were unaware of the FBI's investigation and the optics it has now brought. As the FBI releases more information, the NCAA is forced to enforce their own rules and guidelines; no double standard. Big money/big conferences can't save big programs now. Because the federal government is involved, the NCAA must now come into these programs implicated and enforce real NCAA rules. Pitino is out (regardless if he is involved or not) because the University Administrations are trying to be proactive and get ahead of the current investigations and the impending ones yet to come.

Because of Chuck Person's involvement, Auburn has now lost the commitment of a top 2018 recruit. We will see how this shapes rosters of current programs and ones yet to be implicated in this investigation. Expect Louisville to clean house with its coaching staff and expect players to be suspended and/or ask for waivers to transfer immediately; if they were unaware of the corruption.
