RE: OT: Four College Assistant Coaches Charged in Corruption Scheme
Rick Pitino identified as ‘Coach-2’ mentioned in federal court documents

FBI documents said 'Coach-2' spoke with Adidas' Jim Gatto on the day Brian Bowen enrolled at Louisville

Quote:Rick Pitino's insistence that he knew nothing about the allegations that led to his removal as Louisville's men's basketball coach is being met with skepticism now that CBS News has reported that Pitino is "Coach-2" in a criminal complaint released Tuesday by the Justice Department.

"Coach-2" is referenced nine times in the document -- including once when Christian Dawkins, a sports agent at the root of parts of this scandal that's touched at least eight programs so far, is quoted as saying he had "spoken with Coach-2 about getting additional money for Player-10's family," and that he'd told Coach-2 he needs "to call Jim Gatto, who's the head of everything" at Adidas.

Player-10 has been identified as Louisville freshman Brian Bowen. The criminal complaint states that Gatto conspired to funnel approximately $100,000 from Adidas to Bowen's family in exchange for the five-star prospect's commitment to Louisville, which has a $160 million apparel deal with the international shoe company. The criminal complaint also states that Gatto and Pitino spoke on the day Bowen enrolled at Louisville.

Brad Augustine was among those arrested Tuesday.

He's a grassroots basketball coach in Florida who is quoted in the criminal complaint as saying he expects Adidas to help fund payments to one of his player's family because "no one swings a bigger dick than [Coach-2]" at Adidas. "All [Coach-2] has to do is pick up the phone and call somebody [and say], 'These are my guys.' [And then] they're taking care of us."

FBI Looking Into Nike's "Grassroots Basketball" Division

Quote:According to reports from sports lawyer Darren Heitner and ESPN, the federal prosecutors looking into college basketball corruption have now turned their focus to Nike. The FBI’s New York field office and the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York reportedly served a subpoena to Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League division, which is in charge of “grassroots basketball” at the high school level.

This move should not be particularly surprising. Adidas was the first major sports apparel company to get tied up in this mess, but the case was always about the general influence that big shoe companies have in in the recruiting game. One of the Adidas employees who was arrested earlier this week, Merl Code, used to run the EYBL, and three of the four schools who had coaches arrested are sponsored by Nike. Nike didn’t reply to ESPN’s request for comment, although they did release a statement earlier this week saying that corruption is bad:

Nike believes in fair and ethical play, both in business and sports, and strongly opposes any form of manipulation.

Now that the FBI has begun making arrests, anyone who flips could dramatically expand the scope of this case. It’s going to get bigger. One ominous example: Documents show now-arrested sports agent Christian Dawkins warning Adidas that they should be paying a player’s family more money because a rival company would be “coming in with a higher number.”

Adidas Was Trying To Steer Nation's #1 Overall Basketball Recruit To Kansas
Quote:An Adidas rep that is facing fraud and corruption charges from the FBI for steering a top 2017 recruit to Louisville was also trying to influence a 2018 super-recruit to commit to Kansas, multiple sources told Chat Sports exclusively this afternoon. The sources have been independently sourced (one inside the Big 12 with coaching ties to the SEC, and another recruiting expert close to South Carolina AAU basketball) and provided nearly-identical information.

What We Know:
The Adidas employee, arrested on Tuesday, had been taking a similar approach with the prospect on behalf of Kansas. the leading Adidas college basketball program. The sources both said the player is a top prospect that plays for a South Carolina AAU team on the Adidas circuit and, as of Thursday afternoon, is expected to visit Kansas' Late Night in the Phog Midnight Madness event this weekend.

The player who fits the description is 2018 #1 overall player (according to 247Sports.com, rated #2 by several other services) five-star small forward Zion Williamson (Spartanburg, SC), who plays for the Adidas-sponsored SC Supreme.

Our sources both say it's unclear if anyone on the Kansas coaching staff knew about Adidas' interference in the recruitment of Williamson.

On Tuesday, Adidas’ director of global sports marketing for basketball James “Jim” Gatto was arrested by the FBI and accused of providing $100,000 to an “All-American high school basketball player”, widely identified as 2017 #19 overall prospect Brian Bowen - now a Louisville freshman - in exchange for the player committing to play basketball at Louisville, another top Adidas school. Bowen has not been officially named in the probe, but multiple media outlets have named him as Louisville player involved and the school has suspended him from all NCAA activities.

What To Watch For:
Williamson is still scheduled to visit Kansas this weekend for the season-opening event. He was supposed to visit Kentucky last weekend but canceled due to a "family situation," but plans to reschedule the visit.

It remains to be seen if he will make the trip to Lawrence.

Earlier today, Williamson shared the following message on his Instagram story: "Today ain't the day man, sad day for the family, no drama today please." The message, of course, could be about something unrelated to basketball.

98% of Louisville's Adidas money reportedly went to Rick Pitino

In fact, under [the University of Louisville’s] current deal with Adidas, which expires July 1, 98 percent of the cash provided by Adidas goes to one person: Rick Pitino, the now-suspended head coach.

In 2015-16, for example, $1.5 million went to Pitino under his personal services agreement with the apparel company while just $25,000 went to the program, according to a contract obtained by the Courier-Journal under the state public records act.

The year before, Pitino also got $1.5 million, while the department banked just $10,000.

RE: OT: Four College Assistant Coaches Charged in Corruption Scheme
Three assistant coaches appear in court for bribery
Quote:NEW YORK - Five men arrested two weeks ago, including three assistant basketball coaches connected to the FBI investigation that centered on bribery within college basketball, were released on $100,000 bonds after appearing at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse in lower Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday.

Arizona's Emanuel "Book" Richardson, USC's Tony Bland, Auburn's Chuck Person, along with Adidas' Merl Code and custom clothier and former NBA referee Rashan Michel all appeared in front of judge the Katherine H. Parker on Tuesday.

Code was the first to sit in front of the judge at approximately 1 p.m. ET, and was followed by Richardson and Bland, then Person and finally Michel. Each was in front of the judge for approximately 15 minutes while the judge read their rights, the charges on the complaint, the terms of the bond and travel restrictions.

Richardson, who hails from New York, had his wife, Erin, and several other family members and friends with him in the courthouse. He grabbed the hand of one of his friends prior to the proceedings and the two men could be seen saying a prayer together. Bland, Michel and Person were in attendance with their legal representation.

Federal prosecutors in New York announced charges of fraud and corruption against 10 people on Sept. 26. Each of the coaches is charged with bribery conspiracy, solicitation of bribes, honest services fraud conspiracy, honest service fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and Travel Act conspiracy. The U.S. Department of Justice said each of the coaches faces a maximum sentence of 80 years in prison.

The probe focused on coaches being paid tens of thousands of dollars to steer NBA-bound players towards sports agents, financial advisors and apparel companies.

"The important thing is not to rush to judgment," Richardson's lawyer, David Axelrod, said prior to the proceedings. "It's a tragedy for a truly decent human being."

Richardson's other attorney, Craig Mordock, said that Richardson was "completely shocked" when he was arrested at 5:50 a.m. on Sept. 26.

"That clearly is not a practical possibility," Mordock added of his client, Richardson, serving 80 years in prison.

Each was represented by legal counsel - which agreed to the terms. The preliminary hearing for each was set for Nov. 9, but the preliminary hearing could be avoided if there's an indictment prior to Nov. 9.

One of the lawyers told ESPN that an indictment is likely, and an arraignment would follow within days of the indictment.

"We haven't received any of the evidence yet," Jeffrey Lichtman, Bland's lawyer, said as he left the courthouse. "There's nothing to comment on, not much for us to say at this time. ... It's a dark day for anybody charged. Tony's a good man, anybody who has ever met him knows that."

Christian Dawkins, who previously worked for agent Andy Miller of ASM Sports, and financial advisor Munish Sood already made their initial appearances while Adidas executive Jim Gatto and former Oklahoma State assistant Lamont Evans are expected to appear on Thursday. AAU director Jonathan Brad Augustine was also among the 10 people arrested.

The four coaches have all either been placed on administrative leave or been fired by their universities, and the scandal has also cost Louisville head coach Rick Pitino his job due to the Cardinals connection with adidas' alleged payment of $100,000 to the family of current freshman Brian Bowen.
