But does that make up for decades of no professor/papers/exams/attendance classes that did not exist for decades? And walking away with no penalties? From the organization tasked with ensuring STUDENT athletes earn their education.

Let's be honest,UNC wasn't even looked at. If the NCAA can ignore fake classes at UNC ,I am quite confident they will never see a UNC player's family get a free meal.

Oy vey!

There were no "fake" classes.
All of the classes were listed in the course catalog and open to all students
All of the classes had a professor (the Dean of the department) and a syllabus
All of the classes required a term paper
The "issue" was that the papers were graded by the Dean's secretary and not by a TA or by the Dean himself.

Word parsing? The classes never met, had zero academic rigor, and demanded no actual learning. It was pure academic fraud regardless of how athletics was involved or how a feckless NCAA determined not to address it. SACS put you on a more than well-deserved probation for a year. You should be thoroughly embarrassed by what happened at your university because it devalued all degrees due to UNC's unquestionable lack of quality control.

You're behind the times CP.
Most of what Mary Willingham postulated and Dan Kane (Raleigh News & Observer) "reported" has completely been debunked. Those classes did meet and term papers were required. Because the Dean's secretary graded the term papers and in the academic world she would be deemed to not be qualified, some of the AFAM classes could perhaps be assumed to be of less academic rigor.

https://carolinacommitment.unc.edu/files...REPORT.pdf

"academic rigor?" There is no doubt there was flat out academic fraud beyond just whom was grading what. Trying to brush it off instead of owning up and denouncing what went on is pathetic and further sullies Chapel Hill. And intellectual dishonesty is pathetic.

I told you guys it wouldn't be long. The good news is that we don't have a lot of wins to forfeit during that period.

We hired Mark Gottfried.

New report says assistant coach funneled money to a players family.

Player in question is allegedly Dennis Smith, Jr.

The worst part of the story to me is that it seems that DSJ didn't actually want to go to NC State.

From the News & Observer:

Quote:According to the FBI investigation, Gatto conspired to funnel $40,000 to Smith’s father to secure Smith’s commitment to N.C. State. The FBI pointed out that N.C. State was under contract with adidas at the time.

The indictment points out that Smith committed to N.C. State in September 2015 only to begin having second thoughts. At that time, Gatto agreed to funnel $40,000 through a N.C. State coach, who is not named in the indictment, to Smith’s father.

Unfortunately, the players are always already gone, and no longer subject to any sanction by the NCAA. An interesting question, though, might be whether a potential recruit could be banned if his parents had previously taken money on behalf of an older sibling.

Merely suspending a coach for some number of games during one season doesn't seem to have much teeth to it, if history is any guide. Anything short of a long term ban that has the effect of permanently killing the college career of a coach is probably too little.

But then you get into the whole Mafi style "Omerta" thing, where head coaches can insulate themselves with "plausible deniability", letting assistants fall on their swords.

Ultimately, though, I suspect we will eventually see the NCAA drop its bans on the kinds of payments the FBI is investigating before we will see coaches banned en masse.

Somehow, someway Pack Pride will find a way to blame this on the ACC and the UNC BOT.
