RE: NCAA Basketball and the FBI/DOJ
Chuck made 23 million in 14 years as a player in the NBA. He hung around as an assistant for 8-9 more years. Auburn is currently paying him $240k a year. I get it, that if you make it, you spend it, but why in the heck would Chuck need a $60K "loan" from the ever eloquent Rashan Michel if he wasn't marketing himself to do something illegal ?

I'm sure the NCAA will have Sgt. Schultz on the case by 2019.

Whatever chuck has done Pearl is directly responsible for as of NCAA rule made in 2013. Pearl is finished, Wiley is out, and Chuck is going to jail.

Person took more than 95k and Wiley's parents were given 5k on multiple occasions.

The big news out of this is that Addidas guys are on video with assistants from Louisville (not named but easily identified as "University 6") detailing how Brian Bowen's family was getting $100k for him to sign with the Cards. They'll be lucky to escape the death penalty, and Pitino's college career is done either way.

If Louisville basketball doesn't get the death penalty, no other program ever will.

The problem is how much money is involved now. Media companies want Louisville basketball on TV, the City of Louisville needs Cardinal basketball to service the debt on the Yum Center, etc.

Another interesting thing from the DoJ press conference was them basically saying "Other schools, other shoe companies not mentioned, we know this is going on, we are investigating, and its going to be much better for you if you are then one calling us then if we are the ones having to chase you." They even setup a 800 number for coaches and agents to either turn themselves in or call in tips on others.

Not sure why the Baylor basketball case is being used as an example. According to your own link, they were crippled for almost ten years by the NCAA sanctions placed on them. A "death penalty" would have only ceased operations for 1 season. If anything, this is an example of what the NCAA likely will do.

No one should expect much from the NCAA. We know better than that. All the Power 5 schools have basically been doing it for years with little to no repercussions. Hopefully the DoJ follows through with this investigation and any subsequent ones that may arise once people start trying to save their own necks.

The fact that Baylor is even allowed to have an athletics program should be example enough. And to be a "Christian School" to boot.

SMU has still not recovered from the death penalty they had in the 80s. A decade is a drop in the bucket.

damn

That includes the pass-through to Wiley; appears Person kept 60K and gave the rest to Wiley's mom ("Mother-1" in the complaint).

She looks really bad in the release. She's quoted as saying "He'll listen to anything I tell him to do" in reference to working with the Michel's business management company once in the NBA.

The kicker here, compared to most NCAA investigations: subpoena power.

The NCAA would have had no idea this investigation was going on. They will, however, likely start an investigation of their own to deal with the programs. And I suspect it will get ugly. This will end Bruce Pearl, and probably Jay Jacobs. I've heard reports that Person was the subject of wire taps, and he made some statements incriminating the program. I.e., using the money to pay recruits.

Well, that would cause some problems for Pearl & Jacobs.

Yeah. One-year postseason ban and reduction of one scholarship, show-cause order for Person until he's paroled.

And a two year probation for Cleveland State.

Sounds like Louisville may clean house tonight or Wednesday morning. I wonder what happens to the players? Immediate transfer eligibility (for the ones that didn't take money)?
