But David 'backdoor cover' Bailiff has the kids playing a strong 4q as Pitt calls off the dogs playing their second and third team. Pitt wins 41-24. DB Post game presser highlights the Rice fight, never die, kids attitudes, playing hard, overcame early kick of 11AM CST, etc. But game is never in doubt or competitive.

Pitt 34-18 (Rice gets 6 FGs from its secret weapon - Boswell shaves beard and is unrecognizable in blue and white)

You cannot get an exact number for butts-in-seats, so i guess any quibbling will be over estimates.

yes, attendance is low. news flash. breaking news. I wonder how high it will have to get to be "good"? Whatever it is, we should put an incentive clause in the next coaches contract for "good" attendance.

Why?

If bad attendance is due to bad play...

And bad play due to bad coaching...

The number of injuries we have every year amazes me. No change in S&C coaches seems to fix the issue.

The numbers aren't really out of line with any other program. We're just so thin on talent that every injury leaves a gaping hole.

Speaking of.. any word as to who is out and who is in for the Pitt game injury-wise?

Per Chronicle beat reporter:

DE Blain Padgett out for rest of season
RB Sam Stewart out for Pitt
CB VJ Banks still out
G Cory Klingler out for Pitt
G Ken Thompson out for Pitt
DT Carl Thompson out for Pitt
RB Nahshon Ellerbe questionable for Pitt
S Cole Thomas questionable for Pitt
QB Sam Glaesmann day-to-day

CB D'Angelo Ellis (who broke his wrist in August and was initially expected to be out for the season) may return for UTSA game.

Yeah, I’m not sure our injury numbers are incredibly out of line with other programs.

For example, North Carolina has something like 19 scholarship players out for their game this week.

Wow. That's a lot more injuries than I thought.

It's over 10% of the scholarships (assuming they all have scholarships). We're not even to the mid-point of the season.

With all of those injuries, JK might have enough ammunition in order to justify another extension for Bailiff. After all, he might reason, it is much tougher at a school like Rice to overcome so many injuries to front line players. And, it would only be fair to give the coaching staff a full 5 years AFTER the EZF was completed in order to reap all of the recruiting rewards.

I hope JK is not that stupid. Regardless, I really do not care anymore until Bailiff is gone. I will not waste my time.

That type of move would not be without precedent in Rice history-see Polk, Bob and Braun, Ben. Of course, if a tree falls in a forest, does anyone hear it?

Coachspeak seems contagious:

“One ... loss, I’m not worried about one loss,” head coach(fill in the name) said on Monday. “I’m worried about one win each week. We didn’t help ourselves Saturday with execution and whatever. We’re just focused on the next game to get to 2-3 and then head into the [conference] again."

And whatever?

Was it before the inTerwEbZ that the concern was that Rice wouldn't meet the minimum attendance requirement for remaining in Div 1? (was that a 15k season average?)

Whether the butts are in the seats or not, we appear to have enough season tickets sold for that worry to behind us.

Depends on your viewpoint. If you are one of the megabucks members of the Board to whom JK seems to toadie, JK is priceless.

What's the award for best prediction?

OO has truly earned his optimism stripes, as he's the only one of more than 90-some active players in the Blazernation Pickem contest to pick the Owls to beat the Panthers on Saturday.

(Of course, he's currently sitting in 83rd place. I also dropped a bundle of spots by picking Rice to beat FIU.)

On the other hand, d1owls4life is hoping to make a big jump up from his 12th place spot by "locking" the Owls to lose by 35 points ... meaning that he gets 50 extra points if Pitt beats us by 28-42 points, but loses 25 if the final margin is outside that range.

It was a hard pick to make, but unlike so many here, I just have a hard time picking against my Owls. So I went with the 7% chance, figuring if it hit I would gain a lot in the standings, as the only one to hit. Kind of like calling a raise with 67s at the poker table. Plus I have seen Pitt play.

Unlike the predictions here, there is actually a little something to be won at Blazernation for being right. But my odds of first place are way less than Rice's odds this week. Way, way less.

I always have trouble hitting the locks, so I rarely make them. I hate the gamble.
Not making them keeps me mired in the back of the pack, but missing them mires me worse. I still enjoy the contest.

If you look at my medals, you will see that I have not always been at the bottom of the ratings.

Did anybody else pick Rice here?

Not me. Even though Pitt kind of stinks this year, Bailiff over 10+ years has proven to NEVER be ready for a game like this. Hopefully Saturday will finally be the day we can hang close against a prohibitive favorite (sucks to be a team that's a prohibitive underdog against a team that kind of stinks), but I'm not betting on it.
