Good game Southern Miss. Let this loss fester for a day and then get ready to go take it out on UTSA next week. 04-cheers

You called it Side Joe even though the Southern Miss fans thought you were crazy.

Im sure Graham Harrell has some Mike Leach influence in the play calling

Thanks. It was Harrell's best play calling since he got to North Texas. He is getting better.

Many of the coaches on the UNT staff have ties to Leach. In fact, some left Washington State to join Littrell's staff.

Think any of them would be interested in a HC job at Southern Miss?

Ha! I don't think any of them are ready for the head job yet.

USM has a good staff and your team is going to win a lot of games before this season is over. Hopefully starting Saturday when you travel to San Antonio. I think you defense is going to cause some trouble for the Runners offense.

Maybe USM can take out NutsaK this weekend, but if they don't, UNT is perfectly capable of doing the job.05-mafia

Just watched the highlights.

USM had Fine running for his life the entire first half, then just stopped bringing the heat in the second half. He had all day to throw plus some really poor downfield coverage.

UNT receivers are fast, and Fine is accurate. Any team that wants to beat UNT will have to get pressure on the QB.

Come on man. we (UNT) may have won, but I honestly thought I watched two even-matched teams. It was a 2nd half of being out-coached. No doubt USM coaches will realize it and make the adjustments they need. I think USM v. UTSA will be a tight one.

That does work, but only to an extent...

North Texas has wised up and added role out passes. Fine may be a better passer rolling out of the pocket. Some of our biggest gains this season have come off of roll outs when defenses send pressure. The problem defenses have had with the Mean Green this season stem from North Texas being able to do more things then defenses can account for.

If a D cheats to stop Wilson, your secondary will give up a deep ball. If you send an extra rusher, you will get burned on a roll out.

Mason Fine 1,442 Yards (1st in C-USA), 11 TDs (1st in C-USA), and averaging 288.4 passing yards per game (1st in C-USA)

Jeffery Wilson 93 carries (1st in C-USA), 666 yards (1st in C-USA), 9 TDs (tied for 1st in C-USA), and averaging 133.2 yards per game (1st in C-USA)

Jalen Guyton 444 yards (1st in C-USA), 5 TDs (1st in C-USA), averaging 88.8 yards receiving per game (2rd in C-USA)

And North Texas has two other receivers with over 200 yards receiving and averaging over 40 yards receiving per game.

I still believe Southern Miss has a good defense. They will certainly get another test this week against UTSA. I think the North Texas offense just has a lot of weapons, and they have improved since the start of the season. The Mean Green offense has become very hard to slow down.

Regardless of the outcome Saturday, I think we will see a very hard fought, no-holds-barred, knock-down-drag'em-out, brawl in Denton. Our teams and fans can't stand each other. As it should be.

Again, based on the total defense from the link below, UTSA has had #1 D in conference the past two weeks.

As bad as this stings for USM, I am also happy for UNT and CUSA because we are looking stronger come bowl season. UNT mean green showed this past Saturday and should be a nice bowl team for the conference. Great win and good luck to UNT the rest of the way.

They gave up 41 through 3 games. Same as us. 17 of those came once Wilson called off the dogs after being up 49-0 at halftime vs Southern. They OTOH shut out Southern. If we exclude our match-up were they only scored 10, Baylor is averaging like 35 PPG (includes games against Oklahoma and KSU).

We have the best defense in CUSA and it's not all that close, tbh.

Regardless of the outcome Saturday, I think we will see a very hard fought, no-holds-barred, knock-down-drag'em-out, brawl in Denton. Our teams and fans can't stand each other. As it should be.
Actually UTSA has had the #1 D in the conference the past two weeks at least and the #2 D in the nation. But you are right, let's wait and see how all these stats play out.

Scoring defense =/= Total defense. Southern Miss had a better Scoring defense up until we hung 43 on them. Big difference

I think we will. I'd be more concerned if they still had Mullens. An inaccurate QB isn't that big of a threat to that defense imo. Ito is great but so is our DLine, I don't think he can do it alone.

UNT worries me more. You have an aerial attack to compliment a great RB, unlike USM.

I thought the biggest difference between UNT and USM was the quarterback play. USM's quarterback was inconsistent. He hit some big time throws by missed too many.

UNT is a still a really young team with lots of new faces. I think we're growing up and we're a better team than we were a month ago. When our offense is clicking we can hang with anyone in the conference and when it's not our defense can give up point to anyone. However, we can and will make huge mistakes due to that youth and inexperience.

I'm looking forward to USM-UTSA game this weekend. I could be wrong but my gut tells me these two teams are pretty similar. I'll give the advantage to UTSA because I'm a fan of their quarterback.

USM had Fine running for his life the entire first half, then just stopped bringing the heat in the second half. He had all day to throw plus some really poor downfield coverage.

UNT receivers are fast, and Fine is accurate. Any team that wants to beat UNT will have to get pressure on the QB.

I noticed the tendency to roll-out for Fine. His one interception was outside the pocket, though. Looked very impressive, otherwise. The receivers got a lot of separation in the second half.

For a young QB that wants to be outside the pocket, hemming him in and making him stand in will be a major part of a successful defense.
