Future of Football?
The movie "Concussion" raised awareness of the hazards of American style Football. Last I read 112 autopsies of former players show 111 had CTE.
Now a study is released based on very young players.

RE: Future of Football?
Something is going to have to be done about closed head injuries or the game will be eliminated, at least in educational institutions. The players have become too big, too fast and they hit to hard. The equipment is no longer up to the task of protecting players from brain injuries in particular and-in fact-we may have reached the limits of what technology can do.

When football became too dangerous to play back in the 1890's the rules were changed to eliminate some of the more violent plays (flying wedge, etc.). NCAA should do the same thing today. Slant passes over the middle which put small WRers at the mercy of LBer back-hits for example might be eliminated.

But, we may be at the point where the very nature of the game needs to be changed. Less hitting and more evasion. Flag football anyone? (only half kidding).

RE: Future of Football?
The CTE-Concussion issue may cause numbers at the lower levels to decline.

But there have ALWAYS been kids who didn't play-parents who wouldn't let them for the fear of injury.

Equipment manufacturers will continue to develop safer equipment, rules makers will continue to legislate for safety and coaches continue to teach the safest techniques.

The game will continue to evolve just as it has for the past 100+ years.

But go away? Nope, it's too popular and college-professional level there's too much money involved.

Thoughts on the future?

Before my son played 5th grade tackle football, after two years of flag, I did a little research and found there are more concussions from soccer at that age than football.

I was pleasantly surprised, but it is understandable with headers being such an important part of soccer.

Concussions do not become an issue in football until kids reach the high school level. And, of course, concussions can be a factor in most any sport.

A young lady from our high school got a concussion last Saturday at a volleyball tournament, diving for a ball and hitting her chin on the floor.

A water polo goalie I know got a concussion when his head made the save, but was slammed backward into the goal post.

Cross Country doesn't have concussions, but stress fractures and knee injuries are v-e-r-y frequent and can be life altering.

You can't raise your kid in a bubble playing video games...although some irresponsible parents do.

If a kid wants to play football, let him play!

Participation numbers are way down in high school. In West MI Grand Haven could not field a JV team last year. This year West Ottawa had 14 sophomores come out. These are Division 1 OK Red Conference Schools with over 2000 kids. Even Rockford has seen a big decline. My guess that football will be a club sport with travel teams in 10-15 years.

Some silly parents probably would not let their kids run cross country after seeing this "killer deer" video.

"Yikes, Junior might get a concussion after being hit by a deer!"

The concussion documentaries have really driven kids into other sports. Soccer is way up in HS and Little League.

Without some rule changes and technology improvements I see college football being downgraded from varsity sport to club status or even eliminated. Concern about litigation from impacted players has the universities scared big time.

70 kids tried out for 22 spots on West Ottawa's freshman soccer team. Football had 28 Freshman come out.

Does anyone know if they have the same incidence of concussion in college rugby as they do in football? The lack of helmets and pads makes the players modify their hits.

RE: Future of Football?
Soccer is not "way up in HS."

According to MHSAA Boys Soccer participation rose only 0.38% between 2015-16 and 2016-17 (Football declined 4.6% but is still by far the sport with highest participation both in Michigan and nationally).

There are more variables than just the CTE-concussion scare to explain the decline in Football numbers. They may be intertwined.

First there is specialization. Many kids are choosing to play only one sport usually in hope of getting a scholarship. There is now a fall Baseball league for HS kids in Kalamazoo area, for example.

Secondly are the demands being placed on kids by the HS Football coaches themselves. Too many are pressuring kids to lift weights, do "Speed Training," 7-on-7s, camps, etc. year-round, and more kids are not willing to do so.

And some kids who start playing Football in youth leagues have bad experiences or get "burned out" and stop playing Football sometime before they hit HS Varsity.

There is a definite link between depression, suicide, early onset Alzheimer's,etc. and anabolic steroid use. That was not controlled for in the adult athlete concussion research. McClean Hospital did the research. I can understand why this is not really being brought out.

Yup... nailed it. Everything you wrote plus throw in fall rugby and fall lacrosse in with the fall baseball and the pool of kids goes down fast. There usually isn't much football/soccer cross over unless it is at a smaller school.

RE: Future of Football?
Was just talking to a PA at work asking if she would let her son play tackle football in middle school. I brought up the possibility of testing for CTE not post mortem and how that could affect participation and the survival of collision sports. Then I see this today. A long term study of live athletes could be devastating if proven that even a few concussions could lead to permanent brain damage. http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/26/health/res...index.html
