You know the old saying.... nothing good ever happens in suburban Memphis.

He's not wrong.

To answer the question, football vs Virginia in 2010 at home is probably the greatest game nobody ever talks about. Down 17 at halftime, down 17 again midway through the 3rd, still down 10 going into the 4th. W.

was that the game we faked a punt from deep in our own territory?

No, that was in 2011 at Virginia. I still can't understand how often Hrappman faking punts worked for us that year. We never used him except for fakes and field goals. You'd think other coaches would catch on.

Big Nasty symbolizes USM: Great wins over Bama, OP and MSUcks....and losses to N.E., S.W. and N.W. Louisiana (plus La Tech) hip hip hooray! 04-cheers

While true, you basically just described every coach we've ever had.

I tell ya, that was one thing I LOVED about the Fedora teams. I never felt like we were out of a game. We always had the chance to come back. During the Bower years, I'd have left the game at half time.

And...with Fedora, I never felt we had a game won, because he would always come up with a stupid decision or three to keep the other team in it or lose a game. I will never forget him going for a TD on UAB's 3 yard line with a few seconds left in the half with no time outs, and running the ball, not making it, and of course the time runs out and we don't even get a field goal. Of course we lose the game in overtime.

I remember that as well. I still remember the Hawaii bowl when Hrappman comes in to "punt" and my first thought was "why the hell are we running a fake punt at this point in the game"......sure enough he runs the fake for the first down. How teams never figured that out shows how little some teams put into special teams scouting reports

The loss to Louisville and Dave Ragone. The beginning of the end for Bower, although it did take a while and the end of our dominance over the Cards.

Looking back at that year's schedule/results is somewhat baffling:

Lost at Tennessee 19-16
Beat Okie State and Alabama both on the road by 3 touchdowns each
Beat Memphis, USF and Tulane all by 3 td's or more
Go to Houston and "only" win 6-3 to reach a ranking of #13
Get smashed at home by Louisville by 3 TDs
Beat UAB 33-30 in 2OT
Lose to Cincinnati and ECU by 3 and 5 points respectively...the ECU game was the season ending "Mud Bowl" game at home
Beat TCU in the Mobile Bowl

so finished 8-4 with 3 of the 4 losses being by 5 points or less

RE: Underrated moments in Southern Miss history
We certainly had great momentum that year and really makes you wonder some "what-ifs"...The only side note to add would be that Bama was going through a very low period at that time with Dubose. It was great to beat them no doubt, but they were not the juggernaut that they have been lately. OK State was also not the program that they have now become.
