Having slept on it
Having slept on it, I know NONE of us is pleased after being in danger of losing our Homecoming game to an FCS team. As I watched, I found myself grateful the game wasn't on national TV and probably didn't draw high online viewership. All anyone "out there" is likely to take note of is the final score and Pollard's 100 yard return for TD. But I'm reminding myself of several things.
1. We are fortunate to have a good QB. Riley looked foggy much of the game and still threw for 61%, 2 TD and 0 INT. He also ran the ball pretty well a couple of times.
2. Riley threw completions to 9 different receivers. The top 7 combined for 20 catches, 278 yards (14 Yards per catch) and 2 TD.
3. Our Running backs. Henderson and Taylor combined for 28 carries and 148 yards, and 2 TD.
4. ZERO TURNOVERS. Zero.
5. Our defense is a shell of what we began the season with. I'v honestly lost track of the number of starters we've had injured. That said, the young guys are stepping up. Carter, Slaughter, Goodson, and Rupert, to name a few, combined for 16 tackles and an INT. I think we can still outscore pretty much anyone, and we will have to do that, because our defense isn't going to clamp down on anyone, at least not for more than a drive or two.
6. Kicking game was 3/3 on FG, and 5/5 on PAT's. We allowed SIU ONE punt return. Could have had better kickoff coverage. Pollard remains superhuman.
7. Penalties were bad (8 for 90 yards) but not as ridiculous as they seemed to me during the game. For comparison, we were flagged for 11 penalties, 109 yards vs. UCLA.

Not a great showing, by any stretch. And not nearly as bad as it could have been. Do we beat UCF next week? I have no idea. But we are 3-0 and played in front of 41,000 fans against the Southern Illinois Salukis.

Coach 'em up, Norvell!

We are 3-0. How many times have we been able to say that in the last 50 years? I will never be upset about a Tiger football victory. I don't care who we play.

RE: Having slept on it
There was a time when we lost these games with regularity. Get a big win and back it up with an loss to a team we should have beaten. I mean decades of that kind of disappointment. We have not lost to a team we shouldn't have now in a few years. That alone is a step forward. Nebraska fired their AD yesterday, Butch Jones came close to losing his job and may still. Ole Miss is starring down the NCAA gun barrel. We are still a 3-4 loss team with a chance of winning our conference and making another bowl game. We are not a player in the big picture. But we are still probably the most improved program in the country from where we came. Enjoy the win, be glad we find a way to win these games cause there was a time when we didn't.

RE: Having slept on it
all of the previous posts are good posts.
I have lowered my hopes/ expectations to 'bowl eligible' for this team.
We have some flat out impressive college football players at several different positions.
But, we also have injuries and a porous defense.
If I am wrong and the Tigers kick some major ass the rest of the season, I do not mind being wrong!
Go Tigers!

Coach 'em up, Norvell!

Was expected due to the many factors working against us going into the game. You have a group of young men who just came off a very emotional win the week before. Then you throw in a key conference road game coming up the next week. In between you throw in a game which they believe they should be able to walk on the field and win by going through the motions.

Team was emotionally flat almost the entire game and when they did get into it and got the lead they eased up thinking it was over. All of this playing against a good team who was emotionally into the game from the start.

Hate to think what the game would have been like if Pollard's TD had been called back. It would have deflated what little lift the team had and it could have been a long night.

Honestly, I thought we had 130-150 yards in penalties.
There were a lot of positives as you mentioned, esp going 3-3 on FGs. SIU was pretty dang good and woulda beat UT yesterday. Glad to survive and get the win, but we have some things to improve on.

I give SIU some credit, also. They did not physically look or act like a typical outmanned FCS team. I also keep in mind we are not Alabama, lol.

We expected to be mediocre on defense before all the injuries. At one point last night were missing 6 starters from the unit that ran onto the field against ULM. That doesn't include the others from the 2nd unit who are out. Unfortunately this looks like one of those years.

Who all are we missing now, who are we getting back, and when?

RE: Having slept on it
Salukis did play a good game.

They controlled the clock by getting 23 first downs and running clock every time. They converted 10 of 20 third downs and 3 of 4 on 4th downs. That is pathetic on our part.

We need to cut out penalties obviously especially after we score. Our kicker has a weak leg so 15 yards further back ensures the opposition will have great field position.

We had a unneeded block in the back on Tony pollards kickoff return. Lucky it wasn't called.

Our kicking game is gonna haunt us this year.

Good question. it would be good to get a summary for the UCF game.
