The refs were also very quick to restart the clock after first downs, often not waiting for the chains to be set.
Also out of bounds. I know that is left to the ref's discretion now but there was almost no time saved by going out of bounds.

I saw the same things that the rest of you did regarding the clock. I have never seen officials start back the clock after out of bounds plays and first downs as quickly as that awful gang on Saturday night. I thought that on an out of bounds play the clock was not supposed to restart until the official had put the ball back in play, and that on a first down the clock was supposed to remain stopped until the chains had been moved. Hell, with that gang on Saturday night they were restarting the clock in some instances before the chain gang had even moved a step.

The thing with Stony Brook getting a new clock after consecutive penalties when we desperately needed as much time as possible was infuriating but I have seen that same thing done before over the years. I really love it when the team gets called for delay of game and they start the clock moving again and give them another 25 seconds. I am guessing that they do not restart the clock after a penalty when there is less than 5 minutes left in the game but I am not sure about that.

RE: Stony Brook
There are a lot of situations where you'd give up 5 yards (vs. 1 down) to stop the clock when you're out of timeouts. That's my opinion on why the rule would be that the clock doesn't stop on a false start.
