Hearing they are going to honor the 2007 team at the game Saturday. I loved that team- Ben Mauk, Dominic Goodman, Marcus Barnett,, Mardy Gilyard, Connor Barwin, Terrill Byrd, Haruki, Mickens, DeAngelo Smith, etc.

It will be interesting to see who all is coming in for the game.

Awesome highlight video. Nakamura, Barwin still playing tight end, Mickens. Great stuff.

I wish I could double bold that "be early" part for you. It's a key concept that many of the casuals haven't grasped over the last ten years.

I would love to see UC honor the 1997 team as well this year. Both the 1997 and 2007 teams were important to legacy of Bearcat football. Both struggled in conference play but won their bowl games. Those two teams built the foundation for the current group of Bearcats.

Oddly enough the 2017 team may be laying another foundation.

From Huntington's The Herald-Dispatch...

Quote:Herd defense hopes to close the screen against Bearcats
By GRANT TRAYLOR Sep 28, 2017 Updated 6 hrs ago

[Image: 59cc5177c6656.image.jpg?resize=1200%2C794]
Sholten Singer/The Herald-Dispatch Marshall's Omari Cobb (31) tackles Kent State's Darrick Edwards (12) during an NCAA football game on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, W.Va.

HUNTINGTON - Those passing by may have thought Marshall defensive coordinator Chuck Heater was having a talk about the stock market earlier this week when speaking with media.

Many of the terms used included words such as "expensive" and "investment" to describe what the Bearcats were doing offensively.

That is because of Cincinnati's utilization of the screen play with its backs and receivers.

It is a focal point of Marshall's defense this week in preparing for the Bearcats, and it is an aspect of the game that, when performed right, can return big dividends, as Heater pointed out.

"The screen game is a very expensive play," Heater said. "You just don't throw a screen game in there and judge it. It takes a lot of time and effort and investment because it looks really bad before it looks good. They obviously have made a major investment in it. The first touchdown they had last week was screen game. Navy had the same information that we had, going into the game a week ago, and the first touchdown (Cincinnati) had was a screen to get them back in the game."

Heater went on to say that the Bearcats' screen game is executed well because they block the right people and have confidence in knowing where to go and how to execute the plays.

That means that his defense needs to have all 11 hats flying to the football in order to limit the effectiveness of Cincinnati's screen game.

Marshall defensive end Ryan Bee said that has been a focal point in the late part of the Herd's bye week and as they got back into game preparation this week.

"Stopping the screen this week is one of our No. 1 goals," Bee said. "They can beat us with that really quick. We have to focus on that and stopping the run."

For Marshall, part of the objective - as it is every week - is to win first and second down, so that Cincinnati is put in as many third-and-long situations as possible.

Despite its prominent use of the screen attack, Cincinnati quarterback Hayden Moore is only completing 53 percent of his passes on the season and the Bearcats are converting just 35 percent of their third-down opportunities, which is 93rd out of 130 FBS teams.

Much of that has come as Moore has been forced into third-and-long situations, which takes the quick hits of the screen out of play.

When Moore has been forced to drop back on passes, pressure has been able to reach him and that has limited his effectiveness in the passing game. Cincinnati has just three pass plays over 30 yards this season - all of which came against Navy.

Two of those three plays came on throws which Moore connected with receivers within five yards of the line of scrimmage.

The first was a 46-yard touchdown pass on a wide receiver screen to Devin Gray in which the outside blocking was solid and Gray went untouched into the end zone. The second was a 31-yard completion to Kahlil Lewis over the middle in which Lewis caught a five-yard slant and broke open a big gain.

Moore is most effective when working on shorter routes and letting his receivers work.

The Herd defense will have to stay disciplined to read plays and stay on their assignments in coverage to make sure that those small throws don't turn into big gains on Saturday.

Another Marshall article...

Quote:Despite inconsistencies, Litton says offense is close to breakout
By GRANT TRAYLOR The Herald-Dispatch gtraylor@herald-dispatch.com Sep 27, 2017 Updated 11 hrs ago

Sholten Singer/The Herald-Dispatch Marshall quarterback Chase Litton drops back to pass as the Herd takes on Kent State during an NCAA football game on Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, W.Va.

HUNTINGTON — For Marshall quarterback Chase Litton, film study has played out like an emotion-evoking silver screen feature movie.

Watching that video has Litton all tied up in "nots."

"Not executing, not all on the same page, not where this team needs to be to do what we want to do," Litton said.

For Litton, it has most resembled a horror flick.

It isn't that the offense has been that bad, necessarily.

There have been the moments in which the offense looked cohesive in each game — the 98-yard drive against Miami (Ohio), the first 20 minutes at N.C. State and the fourth quarter of the win over Kent State. As a whole, however, the film was rated poor by Litton because of the inconsistencies that the team has seen.

After seeing the mistakes, Litton and his teammates realize that it is scary how good they could be if they shore up just a few things. That is both an eye-opening and frustrating aspect.

"You need all 11 on offense," Litton said. "You need all five up front doing their job. You need the quarterback, the running back, receivers, everybody to do their job for plays to work. It's not that we haven't been having that, but there's times where we will shoot ourselves in the foot. ...

"It's all there. Everything we want to do, the offense we want to be, is all there. It all comes down to the same thing we always talk about: It's execution. It's taking pride in what we do and getting the job done."

Marshall offensive coordinator Bill Legg equated the Thundering Herd's offense right now to a musical piece, saying all the pieces of the symphony are there, but right now they are playing in different times. Legg said it is on him to get everyone on the same beat so the rhythm within the offense is found. The Herd's veteran offensive coordinator also said that many of the errors being made are effort mistakes — as in, guys trying to do too much.

"Instead of just going out and doing the stuff they can do and they've done 1,000 times, they start pressing," Legg said. "The moment you start pressing, then everything starts getting in a rush and the timing of everything gets thrown off. Sometimes it's better to just take a deep breath, clear your mind, relax for a second and then go."

Legg and Litton both said they hope that the bye week was the deep breath that the offense needed.

The offense went into the bye week feeling good about themselves after a strong fourth quarter against Kent State that produced a pair of scoring drives, including one to ice the game for a touchdown late in the contest.

During that fourth quarter, Marshall found a spark in the rushing attack with Tyler King emerging, which helped build into the bye week also.

Legg said that no matter who is in the backfield, establishing the run will help to ease some of that pressure that the offense has experienced while trying to do too much.

At the end of the day, Marshall is sitting at 2-1 as it heads to Cincinnati for its final non-conference game of the 2017 season.

Litton heaped praise on his teammates for getting the Herd to that mark, and added that it's time for the offense to take the team to the next step.

"Special teams won us a game, defense won us a game," Litton said. "We've been riding coattails this season, and we can't do that. We've got to really step up and be that offense that we really need to be to win games. We're going to be put in situations on Saturday to have to do that."

As if you needed another reason to be there early (and in RED), what more than to impress a huge number of teenagers. A record number of '18 and '19 recruits are apparently going to be attending. EARLY! All you folks lurking and all you procrastinators, get there EARLY and wear red!

RE: Let's talk Marshall
And underdog they shall be...

Quote:Herd embracing underdog role
By GRANT TRAYLOR Sep 29, 2017 Updated 8 hrs ago

HUNTINGTON - For three years, Marshall was one of Conference USA's top football teams and the Thundering Herd was normally taking the opposition's best punch as the favorite trying to fend off the upstart underdog.

After last year's struggles, though, Marshall has become the underdog, and it is a role that the team has embraced collectively.

"We don't expect anybody to give us anything," Marshall wide receiver Tyre Brady said. "They have us as underdogs, then OK. We plan to go out there and show them what we can do."

As the Herd gets set for its fourth game of the season, Marshall is an underdog for the third time in four games. MU enters Saturday's 7 p.m. game at Cincinnati as a 3 1/2-point underdog.

It has been a motivational tool for many players on the team, and the performance has backed it up on the field.

The Herd was an underdog in the first two weeks of the season - the victory over Miami (Ohio) and the loss at N.C. State.

In both contests, Marshall jumped out to early leads.

Against Miami (Ohio), it was the special teams that led the way, giving Marshall a 7-0 lead merely seconds into the game.

The Herd never looked back, but had to stave off a last-ditch drive from the RedHawks to earn the win.

At N.C. State, Marshall jumped out to a two-score lead, which it maintained until a big momentum shift late in the second quarter that gave the Wolfpack an advantage that they never looked back from.

Marshall tight end Ryan Yurachek said this week - like those other two games - is business as usual.

"You never want to be the underdog, but when you have that underdog role, you have to accept it and run with it...," Yurachek said. "We are underdogs this week, I'm guessing, on the road, but that's awesome. You always want to play with a little extra chip on your shoulder if you are that underdog. That's something we look forward to."

In addition to the underdog role, Marshall is also looking to overcome history. The Herd has just one win all-time at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium - that being a 27-9 in 1938, which was one of three wins all-time for the Herd against the Bearcats.

This week, Marshall heads to Cincinnati as an underdog, but no one associated with the Herd side of things is worried about what others think.

The only focus is on being one point better than the Bearcats.

If the Herd gets that accomplished, the team will match its 2016 win total before it is even out of non-conference play.
