NIU is not capable of that type of offense anymore. Most of NIUs possessions are throw aways and conservative. Unless something changes with injury status or NIUs approach on offense, NIU has no shot to keep up with Toledos scoring

Nobody is scoring anywhere near 60. The MAC hasn't seen a team in our conference this good on defense in a while.

I understand the excitement for the defense, but now a week divorced from the Nebraska game, I am starting to realize some caution needs to be exercised. Nebraska has some issues right now so that game probably needs to be taken in context, and once the defense gets worn down by the offense never being on the field, it could really destroy them quickly in a few weeks. Toledo will be so far and away the best offense NIU sees all year, that its hard to gauge what will happen in that game

Relax MD. Our defense is not doing this with smoke and mirrors. They have stood up to the power 5 offensive lines and dominated them twice. They couldn't run on us like Arkansas did a few years ago (granted BC and Nebraska weren't quite Arkansas a few years back). We have several guys making plays all over the field and not just one dominant defender like we had in English and Coffman. We are also healthy and I think we have good depth on defense (not so much on offense). I am confident this will be a great defense throughout the year and throughout the next few years. We just need the coaching staff to grow some balls as far as our offensive play calling is involved. There should be several play action deep balls available to us throughout the game and I hope we take advantage of several of them. Huff is an NFL caliber running back and I hope he gets to showcase his talent the rest of the year and give Santa great open looks when he drops back to pass.

BC is offensively challenged and so is Nebraska. SDSU is better but I agree that we need to not put Santa in a straitjacket and let them play the game. Everyone needs to be play well but we have a chance.

Toledo looking very good indeed. This is going to be an interesting battle between Toledo and SDSU for that Access bowl spot. I think you can throw USF out, they are an ok team but with no real tests on their schedule. You can bet Rocket fans will be rooting for the Huskies to take down SDSU. Rockets need an SDSU loss, if both go undefeated SDSU obviously gets the nod.

In other games, how about Boston College locked in a great game against Clemson.

You are going to make me get all Jim Mora on you if you keep talking about access bowls. It is not even October yet.

Nebraska is averaging 35 PPG against all teams not named NIU.

SDSU really does not have any loseable games after NIU, if they can get by NIU, they will go undefeated.

I think it will be a blowout, Boise is having some tough issues this year.

They can hand you the ball with our run defense and you'd probably get over 100 yds with a few td's. This game is going to be close unless your offense loses some major guys

Quote:NIU controls their own destiny in that access bowl scenario

Not even if they beat BC would they. They'd have to have an AAC team go 1L at least, likely 2L (depending on how well Nebraska & BC does, & the AAC winner's wins & loss(es)). At this point, they Could get in, but most likely a 3L AAC team (happened last year). But I wouldn't count on it happening the next time around. The MAC had a bad week this past week, too.

Quote:Unless something changes with injury status or NIUs approach on offense, NIU has no shot to keep up with Toledos scoring

I think Toledo can be shut down on pts... but yes, NIU will need to score around 30pts or more to expect a win. Toledo's D though is Not Good, so that is possible. Especially if NIU gets a pick-6, and more points off another turnover. If NIU can score 21pts on Nebraska, they can score 35pts on Toledo. It'll just take turnovers to get solidly over the 30pt line.

Can we all please stop calling Huff a NFL caliber running back. He is a good college back but I would take many 2nd or 3rd string P5 programs running backs over him.

Bouagnon and Stingily both got shots at the NFL. Surely you can see Huff has more upside than those guys? Huff is the ideal size at 5'11", 218. Breaks tackles but can make guys miss as well. He has some holes in his game, but purely on a physical talent level, he is very impressive. Let's see him be the lead back for the rest of the season and re evaluate his pro prospects then. NFL Scouts will look at his ability as much as production because he may be in a completely different run blocking scheme for an NFL club. At NIU they want him to hit the designed hole immediately, but say in Denver, they want you to run along the O-line and make a 1 cut read to the hole, which is what the coaches get mad at Huff for doing right now.

We just have different definitions of NFL caliber running back.

Getting a shot in the NFL does not equal NFL caliber running back.
