NCAA after A&M x-cc runner for starting own water bottle company
The NCAA has warned a Texas A&M cross country runner that he cannot advertise that he is a NCAA runner for ads on his own startup water bottle firm without jeopardizing his eligibility. But major corporations can run ads and the NCAA will get paid for it. So a student athletes must cease and desist for being entrepreneurial, but adhere to a socialist system that places stringent rules on athletes trying to better themselves financially. This is ludicrous.

RE: NCAA after A&M x-cc runner for starting own water bottle company
I understand why, though the NCAA is under archaic rules because of all of the point shaving scandals and what not from the early years.
Athletes should be able to pocket anything they make from endorsements. They earned whatever glitz and glamour comes their way, this isn't like some mobster paying them on the side. They're already inherently broke as it is. If I had become a music star during college, wouldn't it be messed up some governing body said I couldn't be paid for it?
The NCAA just needs to get with the times. If nothing else, just handle each situation of an athlete being paid on a case-by-case basis with strict financial reporting, approval or denial and they could even take in a fee. There's no reason an athlete can't appear on the cover of an EA Sports game for example. That's pretty direct with no seedy outside involvement.

Corporate entities like the NCAA have a long "track record" of stealing patents, product, and curtailing enterprises if it adds to their bottom line. They simply tie the individual up in endless court transactions until they settle for a pittance. With the NCAA they step in and yell "amateur status". I'm not one who likes lawsuits against the NCAA, but I agree this is absurd.

My question would be, "How do you police this?" A booster may buy 10,000 water bottles if an athlete has a good game. Essentially funneling money to the athlete. It's the same with autographs. The athlete may get $10 for an autograph. After a big game some boosters may pay $1,000.

As long as there are rules, people will try and get around them. Like I said, strict reporting and a high fee if they try and make too much money.

The SEC is cheating in cross country now? I guess the conference network must be doing pretty well.

Then all the best players will go to the schools with the wealthiest boosters. Oh wait, they already do.

the NCAA is a greedy organization. Geez lay off the kid for just trying to better himself. most college kids don't have much money anyway. Its not like he just signed a multimillion dollar contract.

Under this logic a kid can't be a waiter because the tips he/she receives may be due to their "celebrity status"
