Go find me a 300+ recruit who averaged double figures in scoring or rebounding for a season.
Edit: Sebastian Saiz is one, as is the Lemomte cat for Baylor.
Ron Baker ...
They are rare gems indeed given the roughly 4,500 D-1 players on rosters in just one season.
Still you must admit it's puzzling at best (given your logic) that Gregg Marshall could take a group of primarily JUCOs and unheralded recruits to the Final 4. Meanwhile we had amazing teams assembled of 4 and 5 star dudes that never made it past the first weekend of the tournament.
Good coaching and good recruiting are not necessarily mutually exclusive. It is better to have both because it makes winning easier.
The problem we have now is Tubby has not demonstrated he can recruit or coach up teams to Memphis level unless one is satisfied with one NCAA win in ten years and occasional losing season records. The factors leading to winning (e.g., talent, experience, outside shooting) this season are unfavorable and we cannot assume team cohesiveness given the turmoil last year. The concerns are not limited to those expressing doubts about Tubby here. Indeed, two nationally published magazines project a 11th and 12th place AAC finish.
Furthermore, Tubby has not excited fans about our program. Announced average attendance fell last year (from 12,028 to 9,622) and will likely drop again this season. Unless Tubby wins now at the Memphis level (doubtful), the erosion will probably continue.
The issues we face are real. They will not disappear while waiting and seeing for the full manifested results.
That was a lot to say relative to my comment. The point remains that college coaches have won with lesser players. It happens almost every year.

Georgia Tech overachieved big time and looked very well coached in most of their games last year. I think the way things ended here finally made Pastner realize that he had to hire a good X & O's coach; which he did, and actually listen to him.
If Pastner does a good job coaching this year, he is going to start recruiting at a high level again.

Stam- Agreed. How many coaches do as well as CJP did in their first go around as a head coach? Not many.
PS don't twist my words around tho, it was time to move on.

In retrospect, the AD (if allowed by contract) should have forced Pastner to hire an "X and O" AC since Pastner was too dense or stubborn to realize the need. As it stood at the end of the 2015-16 season, Pastner had to go, but the " what could have been" situation might have been different albeit imponderable.

I agree completely. Of course, we would have preferred if he wasn't so stubborn, would have learned quicker, would have kept improving, would have won more games, but if you put blinders on all of the details and just look at results, he did a remarkable job his first 4 years and through 3/4 of his 5th season.
He needed 1 more win in 2014, either against Houston, UConn in the conference tournament to get a higher seed, or obviously against Virginia. Having said that, maybe if he does make the Sweet 16 he doesn't change his ways and gets stuck in neutral for years after that.
Ideally, he would have left after 2015, but at that point it wouldn't have been a good look for Rudd and the university.

I thought that was the plan right before the Lawsons came into the main picture.
