Remember when he was active in the community and wanted to build the stadium for whatever reason UAB was against it so the story goes. Edited (Just Revisiting the Story, Looks like he is doing Good Know, Would like to know the updated thoughts of The Birmingham people. They loved him once and then Enroned him the next. Seems to be doing good in Houston. Guess its a mute point.

There are good (political) reasons why Scruchy and Seigelman were tried in Montgomery, not B'ham. They had a much stronger case the first time they tried Richard and failed. By moving the trials to Montgomery, they were in Bob Riley's (Republican) "backyard" and his office's help came in handy.

For Richard, his name was erased from the Troy University Stadium, the Jeff State Valleydale campus and Healthsouth sold his pet "digital" hospital which is now Grandview on 280. He didn't do too badly with his JUCO degree in Physical Therapy. Whatever happened to his brother Gerald who was his "right hand man" for years before his fall from grace?

It's truly amazing how much you think you know.

Richard Scrushy got off light. His case is taught in schools now (UAB included), because of how clearly wrong he was. I have spoken to people who worked in finance with HealthSouth (in a UAB classroom setting) who feared for their lives while working for Scrushy. Some did jail time or probation just to keep out of his crosshairs because they knew he'd get out one day. He is a despicable person.

No where in my post did I say Richard Scruchy was "not guilty" or that he is a "nice guy". The trial was moved to Montgomery so that the "guilty as charged" result was more certainly attainable. The result was more a political trial of a Democratic politician than just a trial for bribery. After all, the prosecution never proved that Don Siegleman ever personally pocketed a dime of Richard's contribution to the Lottery Bill promotion. Did Richard donate with intent to get the board job? Perhaps, but he had served on that board previously.

It should be noted that Bob Riley's campaign had received a similar contribution to his own campaigns from Mississippi's Choctaw Casino interests funneled (laundered) through the Alabama Christian Coalition by pac to pac transfer. Their interests were his opposition to any Alabama Gaming laws - casino or lottery that would constitute competition for their business.

Right now Riley is doing nicely with the 5% he can legally rake off the top of his AAA law blessed Scholarship Fund (that diverts millions from the SETF) as its administrator. All Alabama public schools (including UAB) pick up the tab for those state income tax credits. The Alabama Republicans have found a way to divert public school funds to support private schools.
