RE: Memphis vs UCLA TV Ratings
Your true test is the conference game today on ESPN in the ratings game.
Last Thursday the MW matchup of Boise St vs New Mexico had a 0.7 and 1.053 million viewers.
Curious to see how this game rates with USF ranked.

Against:

Cincinnati: 7-14-2

Houston: 3-6

Memphis: 0-10

SMU: 0-1

Tulane: 1-0

Tulsa: 13-28-1

TOTAL: 24-59-3

I can see why they dropped the sport.

That isnt why. They had a plane crash.

Plane crash was 1970, disbanding football was 1986.

I had shocker fan explain it to me as they never recovered from the crash and that the seperation between fbs (div 1) and the fcs (div 1AA) finished it. Essentially the plane crash was the stabbing, the split was pulling the blade out and your program then bled out. Maybe i got it wrong though.

MWC - 9M

I expect AAC ratings to jump much much more this coming weekend and even more when conference games kick to higher gear.

Remember, we had to cancel some games, so I wonder how that would have affected out total.

Yeah...UCF losing their big Saturday Night Primetime Game vs Ga Tech on ESPN2 certainly didn't help...nor did their rescheduled game for Friday Night on ESPNU vs Memphis (was originally going to be Saturday Night on ESPNews).

I’ve always been in the “bring back Shocker football” camp and if it’s ever going to happen again at WSU, it will likely be on President Bardo’s watch or a successor with similar vision; he’s a huge football fan and knows the impact football can have on a university, i.e alumni support, enrollment, etc. We had questionable leadership at the university before and after the tragic 1970 plane crash; we never recovered from that horrible disaster. It’s one of those events that you never forget and stays with you for life. We dropped football in 1986 (Lew ‘hatchet’ Perkins brought out the ax) and it wasn’t long before basketball (14-17 - 1990-1991) headed in the same direction (yes, NCAA probation was a factor, but university leadership was weak and lacked vision); during that span, baseball was our saving grace (National Championship in 1989). We slowly dug ourselves out of a deep hole with new leadership; hired a new President and athletic director in 1999 and the arrow has continued to point upward since.

Moving to the AAC is a good start. The City of Wichita and region has grown significantly since football was dropped in 1986. I hope AAC football fans keep shoving football talk down our throats. Many of our fans are too young to remember football at WSU; yes, we had more lows than highs, but there’s something special about a fall afternoon football game on campus. I feel sorry for Shocker fans that haven’t experienced it or may never get the chance. I dream someday they will…
