Is it incorrect however to say that we could have done better than having 6 losing seasons in a row ?
His methods more often than not brought eye rolls from the players. Some may not admit it now, but at the time they were NOT buying in. He walked around writing in a Franklin planner all the time. It was just weird.
The apologist for Rip I assume are just caught up because he was magnanimous or possibly because he caught lightning in a bottle against UT one time (a win that ultimately meant squat for us nationally by the way).
I think he was a year or two away from leading us to bowl games. He was about to put in a spread...but it was too late for RC already.
Rip had us to where we could compete with UT. The first time we played UT after beating them was at their place. UT qb Tee Martin got off a long pass for them to be able to kick a field goal and UT squeaked by us something like 17-16.
UT fans applauded the Memphis players as they walked off the field that day...classy of them as a fanbase. they are usually so obnoxious.
Not to dig up bones but the way that game ended is emblematic of Rip and why he got fired: too conservative.
We were up on the defending national champions at their house 13-10 with about 2 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, and we had a 4th and goal from about their 2 yard line.
Rip decides to kick a field goal and we go up 16-10. I looked at my wife and said "You KNOW what is going to happen next". And it did. You described it above. Still hurts to this day.
Field goal in that situation is the worst call EVER. Go for it. If you score, game over. If you don't, they have the ball on their 2 yard line and have to drive 60+ yards to kick a game-tying field goal. Your defense had shut them down all game. Idiotic.
We were down about 30 points to Arkansas in that same era, and we have a 4th down on about their 15 yard line late in the game. He kicks a field goal there as well, and we lose something like 38-6. My father in law mailed in his season tickets after that one.

If I had known that before the game I would have been much more confident.
Must have missed my post in the game thread where i stated that Rip still has trouble winning at LBS.

Rip is a good guy, all heart. Class act. He didn't cheat. He did all he could largely by himself. He had his shot and it's over. So let it lay, I appreciate what he tried to do.

Contrast that to the fake run this week in a similar (with many more points) situation. Fake it or flat out go for it.
I like the man, though. And it was a long time ago.
I always laugh thinking our coaches at one time were Rip, Tic, and Joy.

RE: Rip
Ripp was building the program by playing a tough schedule, Michigan, Michigan state, Mo. Minn. and recruiting the schedule. Then tommy west takes his job and wins with the team Ripp recruited by dumbing down the schedule. Had Ripp continued his plan we might be in a P 5 conference now. He did beat utk and tommy was gracious enough to bench Deangelo and allow utk to win. I also understand we turned down a pay out game with the Ohio state to help tommy have a better record, Ripp would of gladly played that game, even with tommy s recruits

All true. Except we would not have got DeAngelo Williams, and without DW the Tigers would have never reached the heights that they did. They would have been good, but not as good. IMO.

They had to be the ones from east Tennessee. The ones from west Tennessee would not do that in a hundred years.

RE: Rip
I disagree, Wimprine was a freshman when Ripp left and Ripp had started the process of following Delo and tommy knew the interest in Delo, so the wheels were in motion for a kid from Wynn Arkansas and tommy followed through on a recruit Ripp knew had the toolls. U r right, no DeLo and program steps back.
I guarantee DeAngelo would not have sat on the bench in the game at utk if Ripp were coaching, he'd have played anD we'd have two wins on utk
It's history now and let's hope we're on the way, but we'll get there a lot quicker playing a tough ooc schedule

As is evidenced by his wildly successful career as a head coach after he left Memphis.
