Was thinking about that last night, and it's probably too soon, but do something like a drive to donate $85 to some fund; duke club, a scholarship if he has one, if not let's get one endowed right now haha. I'm sure there will be an opportunity to donate in his memory. Count me in. As a male holding a JMU degree, I and every other JMU dude that's had a good experience and success in life owes to the cause!

I would hope the folks in Advancement have something in mind, but on the other hand, donating to something you love about JMU would probably be what Uncle Ron would have wanted too since it all helps JMU.

Hoping to see some giving details soon... but I know that there is a charity golf tournament each spring in memory of Ron's son who passed away 5-10 years ago

So many great stories...and love seeing all the pics people are posting on FB / profile pics with him ... my older brother had a direct connection through Pres Club and we were there at the same time. Without getting into all the details, both our parents were struggling with health and finances - paying tuition was looking dicey... and a couple of half-year scholarships just kinda showed up...I wrote him a thank you 5 years ago and he sent back a hand-written note - glad I have that and his sig on the diploma ... and Christmas on the quad was always a blast when the martinis had been flowing

Your last sentence would make Alger squirm by suggesting a Christmas celebration on campus. And that defines much of the difference between a common sense prez and an out of place nerd prez.

I believe the same putz on Facebook JMU Nation that said "no one has the right to tell other fans to be quiet when we're calling offensive signals", also said "it's too soon to ask for donations in honor of Uncle Ron". I hate contrarians.

Yea I decided NOT to comment on his comments...if we're thinking of the same person he gave me some grief when I was advertising a Richmond Alumni Event that it was not clear how to register when I linked to the event page and it said REGISTER at the top... He is, of course, entitled to his own opinion...

When I worked at JMU in the late 1980's and early 1990's, Dr. Carrier would spend the night in a residence hall (usually Eagle) each semester. As an administrator in Residence Life I was terrified that something awful would happen but he always came through his adventure like a trooper. I am not sure how much sleep anyone would get during those visits but the folks on the floor and in the entire building were so excited and proud that he was "one of them" for at least an evening. He had an amazing ability to balance the fiscal responsibilities of running a growing-by-leaps-and-bounds University with an incredibly personal touch towards both faculty/staff and students. I had a chance to work with him a bit last year and he could still tell stories with the best of them. He mentored so many people both formally and informally and he will be missed deeply. He truly was everyone's Uncle Ron.

That's sad, but probably correct. You go out on a limb, like he so often did, you get a lawsuit handed to you. I hate what we have become. People in leadership roles are forced to be managers rather than stepping up and leading and taking ownership of their role.
