This was predictable, and why I had hoped for a less "convincing" win there. We need Mo to win some games this year, at least enough to look respectable. I'd like to see them win every AAC game.

AAC has a lot of bad teams so ECU could when some games.

I think Mike Houston is smart. I don't think he would take a job unless he believes he will have success. I am not sure he would have that success at ECU. I am sure he saw JMU has prime for success and so took the job.

Ecu's only potential win at this time is at UConn and that's just a toss-up really.
I would hope Mike Houston can wait for a bigger job than ECU. Stay a few years, win more titles and then go to a mid-range P5. I couldn't be too upset there as long as Bourne has a real back up plan.

Ruffin's contract will be completed at the end of this academic year plus they have something set similar to what we had with EW. It appears they were only on the hook for a total of $800K ($400K x 2 years remaining oh McNeil's contract). Therefore, they would only be dealing with Montgomery's contract should ECU make a change. Montgomey's base is also $400K per year for a total of $1.2M they would have to pay out should he be let go at the end of this season.

RE: ECU fans want Houston
I desperately hope HC Mike Houston stays for several more years but ECU might actually be the ideal progression for him. ECU has tremendous history and fan support for a G5, they are upgrading their stadium and have lots of talent. They're actually similar to us a couple years ago, have most of the right pieces, just need the right guy to put them together.

He may be better off taking that job than a P5 rebuilding project. ECU is bottoming out and if he were to quickly turn them around to a Top 25 team in a few years he'd get a much better P5 job than if he were to struggle at a Boston College or Rutgers.

Anyone know if he has NFL aspirations? Not sure if he'd be interested in the positional coach to coordinator to HC route but many guys like Dan Quinn start out at smaller colleges and work their way up.

This is the beauty of a long post-season run with regard to keeping your coach at the FCS level. Anyone that is looking to make a quick hire to get "their guy" (see most FBS schools) will have already hired someone instead of waiting around for the hot FCS guy, who may or may not have wandering eyes.

Tell that to Craig Bohl and Wyoming. At least Bohl had the decency to tell his new employer, "I don't start until my current team's season ends". He then just went on to win a third consecutive title, so it didn't sting too much for Bison fans.

More than a few peole thought Bohl might have had a shot at a better job, though. Living here in Colorado, I know a bunch of Cowboys fans who really support their team well, but this past Saturday's game shows they have a ceiling. That matchup in Laramie against a rebuilding Oregon team at altitude was an opportunity for a program statement win and they appeared outclassed from kickoff. Wyoming could still contend for a conference title, but Houston at least appears to have set himself on the beginnings of a trajectory that could potentially end up higher than that.

When Houston leaves, it will be for one of the FBS schools in VA, NC, SC, GA or FL. He's not going to leave his recruiting base. I could even see him going to Tennessee under the right circumstances. The team to watch is NC State, not ECTC. State had all kinds of hype coming into the year, but they have a really tough schedule and I don't think they'll live up to the hype. If they go 5-7, Doeren will be gone. His contract is up next year, and they aren't paying any other coaches. They have the boosters to pay crazy money for a coach. Houston would be a prime candidate.

I agree with the beginning of your post, but I believe turning ECU around and winning in the AAC would be a much easier task than elevating NC State to the top of their division of the ACC. When you don't get the Pack ahead of FL State and Clemson, your head coaching days start to be numbered. I know he can get ECU back to it's winning ways and then move to a better situation than NC state has found itself caught up in. For State to get to the top of the ACC Atlantic it will have been more of a result of something happening to FSU and Clempson than NC State improving.

I'm preparing myself for Houston to be gone after this season. I expect Houston to be more strategic than Withers and not jump at the first opportunity. Rebuilding ECU may not be the best spot for him especially if he sees someone fired after only 2 years. I think he could get a shot at a low level FBS school.

Honestly, the perfect place for Houston would be a Coastal Division ACC school. If he were to get the GT or UNC-Cheat job, he could probably have them in the ACC Championship game every season. Playing VT, Duke, and Miami is a lot easier than playing FSU, Clemson, and Louisville every year.

Why in the world would Houston go to ECU? ECU is academically challenged and has to compete with ACC schools that are much more attractive to recruits. Why be a kid's third choice when you can be their first choice? I see him going to the ACC.

Houston isn't going to take the job at ECU. They fired an alum after an off year, and will likely fire Montgomery after 2 years.

Those kind of actions make it hard to hire good coaches. It is also a place where he can't win immediately, imo.

He will get a shot at a higher profile job if he is patient.

This is a bummer thread on a Monday, :puke

Yes, I agree. Clemson is especially set for a long time to be at the top of the food chain.

While I still hope we can keep him a while longer, I would think the coordinators should get serious consideration, and try to hang on to some assistants. Citadel managed to stay relatively strong when he left, but they acted quickly and decisively.
