The pace of CTE research suggests the big changes for football may begin arriving in the next 5-10 years.

I see little hope that helmet design alone is going to be enough. My guess is that college football is going to have to go back to its single platoon roots. Prior to 1964, substitution rules and limits on squad size made separate platoons for offense, defense and special teams impossible. Go back to those rules and players will be much smaller and much less explosive. The game wouldn't feature such spectacular collisions and might not be as popular but it would be far safer. Endurance would be at least as important as strength.

You could very well be right. The size of the average NFL player has grown significantly since the 1980's. I remember when The Fridge was considered freakishly large. Today, not so much.
