Seriously, teams that look like they definitely are challengers to win CUSA:
La Tech
UTSA
Marshall
WKU
USM

Bowl contenders and could surprise in division race:
MT
UNT
ODU
UAB

Bottom:
FAU
Charlotte
FIU
Rice
UTEP

Is there that much of a difference between UAB and FAU?

An fbs win so far...Splitting hairs

I am leaning towards UTSA at the top. Tech up there by default. Neither Tech or WKU are the same teams as the last few years. USM and Marshall looking good too. The only reason I have hope for my Dawgs is that LSU got manhandled by the same team that made us their Biotch in our home stadium last week. Miss State is legit #2 team in SEC.

RE: Week 4 power ratings
1. UTSA
Last week:
1
Beat up on an FCS team, which made me wonder: Has UTSA tried to bring in South Dakota for a buy game? Because Roadrunners? And Coyotes? Put a pile of bird seed on the 50 yard line and let come what may?

2. Louisiana Tech
Last week:
5
A win against Western Kentucky last week, paired with a victory against South Carolina this week, would confirm that the Bulldogs are going north in the standings.

3. Marshall
Last week:
4
The O/U for last week's Kent State game was 50, which means that it would have taken until midway through the 12th quarter for the Herd to make the over. Still, it's nice for CUSA to be mentioned alongside "shutout" without it being followed by "of the New Year Day's bowl race."

4. Southern Miss
Last week:
7
Road wins against FBS opponents — even if their athletic budget is so low that they still wait until nights and weekends to make recruiting calls — can never be taken for granted. Or granite, if you're Rick from Rick and Morty. Which you're not. Because you're not a cartoon. Jesus, people.

5. Middle Tennessee
Last week:
2
A blowout loss to Minnesota is not the way they wanted to wrap up the Oh Yeah That's Right I Forgot They Were P5 Teams World Tour, though losing your QB on game day doesn't help no matter who you are.

6. Western Kentucky
Last week:
3
Um ... erm .... uh .... *tugs collar uncomfortably* ... at least the basketball team has that stud cen ... oh ... um .... is that my phone ringing? It's work, I gotta take it.

7. Florida Atlantic
Last week:
9
Progress does equal wins! Or win, at least! That Buffalo game could speak volumes about The Lane Kiffin Experience.

8. Old Dominion
Last week:
6
For crying out loud. The Tar Heels had more trouble with their African Studies midterm. And this week, the Monarchs visit Virginia Tech with what appears to be the first starting quarterback in Division 1 history to not be alive before 2000.

9. UAB
Last week:
12
The win against Coastal Carolina is the biggest in the rebooted Blazers' history, replacing ... their other win. Nevertheless, 2-1 is a thing of beauty and a joy forever compared to 0-and-forever.

10. North Texas
Last week:
10
It was a good game in the first three quarters, at least? No, seriously, it's a good showing against a surprisingly stout Big 10 team at their place. Much better performance than the line (-22 Iowa) indicated.

11. Rice
Last week:
8
The Houston loss was, to quote TLC, damn unpretty. Yes, they had songs other than Waterfalls.

12. FIU
Last week:
13
Call it a 0.5-0 week: The Panthers lost their game with Indiana, which means they didn't lose their game to Indiana. And if there's any hope at all for a bowl, a season-ending game with UMass helps the cause.

13. UTEP
Last week:
14
It says something about where CUSA is this season when the team that loses at home by 47 points and fires their offensive coordinator for being less offensive than an NPR podcast on Cream of Wheat somehow moves out of last place. It probably has something to do with losing at home to a P5 team, as opposed to ...

14. Charlotte
Last week:
11
... North Carolina A&T. But the good news is the Charlotte football is on the ris ... whoops, that was part of my NFC South power rankings writeup.

I think we are all way overrating Miss State. We played very poorly and if you take away some of our boneheaded mistakes that game would have been pretty close. They beat a LSU team that was obviously way over rated. Granted they are probably one of the top teams in the west because the west is down this year. We will see, but they were much more impressive against LSU than us.

The SEC is down but not out. My other Alma Mater Bama looked good when they wanted too but Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, and A&M all look rough. I watched Miss State develop swagger in our loss and carry it over into the LSU game. They physically handled both us and LSU which tells me they will be trending up for a while. Tech was not impressive to me against WKU. I know we had an amazing 4th quarter but what about the other 11 so far this season? Offense is tepid and Defense is still shallow. I am just not sold yet...

6-6 for UAB if we stay healthy. That easy win vs UAB doesn't look so easy now since we have played like crap and averaged over 30 a game. It's going to be beautiful when we put four quarters together. The firsst three games we look like a team that has not played in two years.

Ha! That's funny. What a great dominating performance against ULM yesterday.

If you watched the game you would have seen a dominating performance. The game ended with USM on the ULM 2 and then took a knee 2x so as not to run up the score. Another thing that USM has....class.

Several drives were killed by some of the more than 100 yards in penalties. Still had over 500 years of offense. Held them to just over 300. By comparison they had over 400 against Memphis and Memphis had less than 500.

Don't get how FAU is bottom they lost to Navy who gives everyone trouble especially when you have 37 players that you didn't have in the spring. Go to a top 10 teams house and play a tough game then only give up 117 yards to an FCS school.
FAU would beat UAB by 30 tomorrow the talent close at this point and FAU will keep getting better as they gel.

The funny thing is watching everyone radically change their picks from week to week. #1 = whoever had the week's best win. Last week's hero is bottom half of the conference after this week's loss.

RE: Week 4 power ratings
1. La Tech - Won early conference showdown, overshadows big loss to strong Miss. St.

2. MTSU - Only 1-2 but against tough first 3 opponents.

3. WKU - Tough loss to La Tech, but expect solid program to still fight for championship

4. Marshall - Two Mac wins, competitive against NC St.

5. UTSA - Big win over Baylor, but that might not mean very much

6. USM - Close loss to Kentucky, plus two should of won wins

7. NT - Making a ton of errors, but there is talent there

8. ODU - 2-1 as predicted

9. FAU - May be sleeper in conference

10. UAB - 2-1 against any teams is a good start back into football

11. Rice - Improved since Australia rout

12. FIU - Rebuilding and hurricanes a tough combo

13. UTEP - Horrible schedule, but loss at home against Rice is why they are rated here

14. Charlotte - Bad start, deserve last at this point.

I really don't get the chest thumping by UAB. So far you've beaten a FCS team and Coastal Carolina, who apparently isn't FCS anymore? Are they transitioning? You got destroyed by a traditionally mediocre to bad MAC team. Iget being excited about wins, but the only teams left that should be as easy or easier than your current three opponents are UTEP and Charlotte. Maybe Rice? I'd take Rice vs UAB unless they quit on their coach before then. My guess is one more win. I'm no psychic though, so who knows?

RE: Week 4 power ratings
I am really trying to understand why everyone is so high on UTSA. Yes, they have two wins -- over 0-3 Baylor and 1-2 Southern. This is the same UTSA team that went 6-6 last year. Their schedule this year is a pretty easy one. With the two wins they already have, they may get to eight wins with potential wins against Texas State, North Texas, Rice, UTEP, FIU and UAB -- but, frankly, I'm not convinced the games against Texas State, North Texas and UAB are necessarily sure wins. Then from my perspective, they have potential losses coming up against Southern Miss, Marshall and LA Tech. I believe it would not be surprising for UTSA finish up with anywhere from five to eight wins.

So, when it comes to the West, as of now, I see LA Tech as the leader, with (in order) USM, UTSA, North Texas and UAB as potential challengers and Rice and UTEP bringing up the rear. I'll be glad to revisit this after week six.

So all the talk everyone was saying before the game about how bad both teams are and how they don't look like championship teams, all of a sudden is forgotten? If that was the consensus, then why now is Latech the team to beat? Latech beat a mediocre CUSA team by 1 point during the last seconds of the game. They were never controlling the game and could have easily lost.
I get that UTSA has only played 2 games. Southern, a team they were supposed to destroy, which they did and the starters held them to zero points and 40 total yards before coming out. That game was a sure win, but also a bit impressive on defense.
And Playing at Baylor, as 15 point underdogs, shaking off the rust on their first game (Baylors 2nd), and holding them to 10 points (3 if not for a muffed punt return) and 274 total yards. Last week (33) Duke gave up more yards and more points to them while only putting up 7 more points and 55 more yards than UTSA. Also playing at Duke. After 3 weeks, maybe, just maybe Baylor isn't bottom of the barrel but instead were just outplayed by better teams. BTW, Liberty, UTSA, and Duke are all still undeafeated teams right now. Just another lense to look through.
