RE: Refs
And yes, Toledo was guilty of too many of the infractions that were called.

I think it was the NON calls that hurt Toledo the most... there were some major holding going on that the refs looked the other way...
This. Tulsa could vastly improve their defense by switching their o-line to defense. They had some awesome tackles on our pass rushers.

now, that's funny!!!

The refs screwed up some but I got so sick of seeing guys block Tulsa defenders in the back I could've screamed. Wait, I DID scream. The play clock thing was a total brain-dead move and they seemed a bit flummoxed at the pace, but I blame the Rockets for much of the frequency of calls against us. The paucity of calls against Tulsa was perplexing.

I watched the replay this morning and made a couple of observations

- of the 15 penalties on Toledo, there were 3 that I would have said were completely wrong call.

- the refs seemed to know the Tulsa team fairly well. A lot of joking around going on between officials and players or the coaches. I always thought it was a penalty for a player to drape his arm over the shoulders of an official. Maybe it is NCAA basketball where a technical is supposed to be called. I'm either imagining this or can't specifically cite where this occurred recently and a penalty was called.

- the pass interference call made by the guy defending Thompson on the final drive was a bogus call. At least it went in our favor for once.

- the offsides call against Odeniyi was one of the bad calls. He had to use a micrometer to determine if he was offsides. Would literally have been by a fingernail being across the line. Incomplete pass and they get another shot and eventually score a few plays later.

The offsides was a correct call. It happened directly in front of me. I saw he was lined up 2 or 3 feet beyond the nose of the ball. Knew the ref had to call it......

I was wrong. I had thought it was that you had to have a hand or foot on the ground that was in the neutral zone to be called for offsides. I just looked it up and it states that any part of your body in the neutral zone constitutes offsides. Thought for sure you were able to lean over the LOS in the past and not be called for a penalty as long as either the hand or foot was on the ground (ie not jumping across with nothing touching the ground). Apparently not the case. I guess we were able to get away with it back in HS because we always leaned across on short yardage plays on defense.

RE: Refs
one other thing I noticed during the game that seems to be unsportsmanlike to me. The bench of Tulsa would yell "holding" on every pass play we ran - trying to influence the refs. that an obvious holding had occurred and it was spontaneous. Probably works some of the time, but doing it on every pass play would seem to lose it's influence during the course of the game. Thing is - that is being coached to occur, or at a minimum, is not being stopped from occurring by the coaching staff.

I wasn't on that side to hear it and I've never refereed but I think I'd get tired of that quickly if I was a ref. Close calls might get a nod toward the offense.
