Memphis's fake fg
We never see play like that under DB, just because of fear of failure!

we need coach take risk and willing to call that kind of play.

Biggest risks I can remember DB ever taking:

  1. Going for a TD from four yards out at the end of the first half against Purdue in 2011. We got it and wound up winning by 2.
  2. Boswell's rabona onside kick in the 2013 Bayou Bucket. Not really a risk as UH could kneel out the clock by that point if we kicked deep.
  3. The 4Q against North Texas in 2013 where we failed to score with goal to go for eight straight plays. Not really rolling the dice as we were down by 12 and it was obvious that TDs were required. We only got one more possession the rest of the game.

Two of the three "riskiest" calls that I can remember DB making were conventionally necessary.

So, that makes a fourth play, roughly one every two and a half years.

We tend to forget the 4th and 10 from the Rice 5 against Tulsa in DB's first year. I cannot find a valid play by play link anymore, but if I recall, it was the 4th quarter, and Rice was down by more than 1 TD. Could have played it safe to punt away, but defense wasn't stopping Tulsa. (It still didn't after scoring. I think that drive ended in a TD to get it within 7 points, but Tulsa came right back.) So he trusted his offense and went for it.

That may be the ballsiest call of his time at Rice. Probably the only one, based on the what we're comparing it to. None of those other 3 really fall in this category.

Found a link. It was 4th & 10 from the 1, in fact. But Rice was down by 2 scores, and with less than 3 minutes on the clock. The TD was followed by an unsuccessful onside kick, and Tulsa ran out the clock to win the game.

So again, basically forced into it to have any chance of winning the game.

Should have thrown to Dillard the first time. Clearly Casey can't catch.

RE: Memphis's fake fg
Thanks for finding it. I swear we've seen punts away when down by 2 scores late in a game, when deep in his territory, since then. It definitely feels like something he wouldn't do now in a similar situation.
