Lady Stangs Move to 11-1

DALLAS (SMU) - After a closely played first half, the SMU women's basketball team scored 47 second-half points to pull away from visiting Tulsa Saturday afternoon and notch its seventh-straight win with a 75-60 victory. With the win, SMU improves to 11-1 overall (2-0 WAC) while Tulsa drops its second consecutive game and falls to 8-3 overall (0-2 WAC). The win also matches a program-record nine consecutive home wins, which took place during the 1999-2000 season.

In the first half, both teams played tight defense and the score throughout the first 20 minutes reflected it as the lead by either team did not surpass six points. SMU held a six-point lead (28-22) with 1:27 remaining, but Tulsa scored the next five points to close the lead to 28-27 going into intermission.

In the second half, SMU shot 50% from the field and kept its cool on the court, not allowing the Golden Hurricane to get a run and taking over the momentum of the game. Tulsa, however, did tie the game at 34-34 at the 15:21 mark in the second half, but SMU regained the lead and did not look back. Four consecutive three-point field goals by Kendall Shead (two for Shead), Katie Gross and Shonte Roberts (her first career trey) extended SMU's lead to double figures. Clutch free throws down the stretch solidified the Mustang victory.

SMU's Janielle Dodds posted her third consecutive double-double (and her seventh of the season) with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Shead added 14 points with Shonte Roberts posted 12 points and six boards for SMU. The game's high scorer was Tulsa's Jillian Robbins with 26 points and 12 rebounds.

SMU embarks on its first WAC road trip of the season next week with games at Fresno State (Thursday, Jan. 6) and at Nevada (Saturday, Jan. 8).

2nd Straight Overtime Game No Match, Top Tulsa, 95-83

TULSA (SMU) - Playing their second overtime game in three days, the SMU men’s basketball team rallied for a 95-83 overtime win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday, Jan., 1 at the Reynolds Center.

Trailing 48-45 at intermission, SMU came back in the second stanza to force an extra frame. The Ponies blew away the Hurricane in OT, outscoring TU 17-5 in the final five minutes.

Reigning WAC Player of the Week Bryan Hopkins led SMU with 32 points and Oklahoma native Eric Castro shattered his career high with 28 while adding a team-high eight boards.

SMU shot a blistering 54.2 percent for the game, 57.1 percent in overtime. SMU also hit all eight free-throw attempts in the OT period.

With the win, SMU improves to 6-4, 1-1 in WAC play, while Tulsa falls to 2-8, 0-2 in league games. Up next for the Mustangs are the Fresno State Bulldogs, who visit Moody Coliseum on Thursday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m.

It's nice beating Tulsa, but damn I wish we beat them when they were good.
