Just did what a G5 team is suppose to do if you want respect. Home win against a ranked P5

Pretty sad how much they've passed us up. They invested in their program and are past us for good. So tough to take.

It's amazing at our inability to grow our fan base during the mid 90s-late 00s era...we had a damn good respectable football program. Why the hell didn't our fan base grow during that era?

I used to chat with the MEM fellers on the cusa board about that back in the day.....it always consisted of, "what are you guys waiting on with the FedEx $$$"

they didn't disagree.....

they could become a powerhouse if both programs start to click over the next 5 years....

I easily foresee FSU/UL potential for the Tigers....

RE: Memphis
Our fanbase is about the same....we suffer from SEC-itis when OP and MSUcks are doing OK....and the ODU's, Charlotte's and UNT's on the schedule have turned folks off.

I remember in 2011, an OP poll of football fans in Mississippi had State ranked first and USM second in popularity, with the webbels trailing.....so we still have the potential..

We just need an exciting season to get folks off the "schnide", and giving the game away to UK didn't help in that endeavor..

Makes no sense that Memphis doesn't play y'all anymore. Most Memphis fans seem to want it and it would draw well on both sides. Yet we have home and homes with ULM, South Alabama, Georgia State, and just announced a series with UNT. Go figure. 03-zzz

I know I don't get it....would be great for both schools....

I've pounded the table about playing you guys, ECU, and TU in some rotational series since you guys moved to the aac....

from this fan's perspective, it's a shame that hasn't happened with 'any of the above' to date....

Here's the thing about Memphis: they don't have a huge diehard base but they have a TON of fairweather/casual fans in Shelby and DeSoto counties that turn out when they are good. Part of the benefits of being in a metro area with about a million people. When they are rolling, they'll have 35-40k for conference games and 45-55k for big games like Ole Miss and UCLA. They had 47k today vs UCLA but did actually announce 10k (!) for ULM in the season opener. However, that was a late start on a Thursday night for a game played in a monsoon so I will give them a pass.

Better question is how a dreadful ECU team got 44k today. It really is amazing how they grew their fanbase. I know they were playing a ranked VT but do you think we would have sold out our 36k stadium for the same game? Don't think so. Greenville surrounding area is somewhat comparable to Hattiesburg too (110k vs 80k).

ECU had the best attendance every year in CUSA 2.0. They regularly were close to 50k. Unlike us, they actually had vision and leadership for their football program.

Folks just have to be reminded on here every now and then: ECU has 10,000 more students a year than USM...There are no SEC schools in North Carolina...North Carolina is one of the fastest growing states in 'murica, with 10.5 million people.

So there is no apples to apples comparison..

I basically just had that conversation with our former beat writer, Mr. Dougherty about that exact same thingy.....

when you drive down to it, it's simply amazing the poorest state in the nation has had 3 D1 schools over a half a century now......
