Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
Why in the world do these games exist? A sampling...
West Virginia vs Delaware State
North Carolina State vs. Furman
Colorado vs. Northern Colorado
Auburn vs. Mercer
Gerogia vs. Samford
Rutgers vs. Morgan State
Washington vs. Montana
LSU vs. Chattanooga
Virginia Tech vs. Delaware
Ok, that's enough! I'm talking FBS vs. FCS. I propose a new rule...schedule these as much as you like, but by rule, NO FBS team can make the playoffs if you schedule an FCS team. Yeah, I know there is the VERY, VERY occasional upset, but come on...if you're going to have a playoff for the best of the best, NO FCS scheduling permitted.

Were you a fan of Marshall when they were FCS? And like WVU is seriously gonna challenge for a playoff spot.

RE: Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
I was, rabidly. And was a fan of both then and now. It doesn't change my opinion. I felt Marshall should schedule up when it could, as should WVU. I understood why WVU didn't play Marshall, although I wanted them to. I don't see that as inconsistent. Each institution has to do what is best for them.
I'm not suggesting, at all, that this kind of scheduling should never take place...only that you can't challenge for a national title if you do it. And, yes, I think that in a given year, WVU could challenge for the National Title in a given year. If you'll recall they played Notre Dame for the National Title in 1989 (and were beaten.) At the moment, the Mountaineers are up 52-10 on Delaware State with an entire quarter to go. What good does that do anyone?

The FBS schools are avoiding the best FCS schools.
Would Marshall even be competitive with a top 10 FCS school?

Nope, not in most years. This isn't an argument for or against Marshall playing anyone. Even if we ran the table, it's unlikely, in the extreme, that we would be playing in the playoffs. in fact, our schedule of three years ago, was so dismal that we were never taken seriously, even before losing to WKU and ending up 13-1. USF may have that same problem this year, although they are every bit as talented.

P5 playing P5 and no other FBS or FCS is reasonable. If you allow P5 vs other FBS then FCS should be allowed to play also.

Why. At least with p5 versus FBS non p5 the scholarship numbers are equal and many p5 play at non-P5 stadiums. However no p5 nor will the vast majority of FBS programs will ever ever play at a FCS stadium.
P5 paydays are the only thing keeping FCs football viable

That may be true, but is that justification for a P5 school playing an FCS school?

They are pseudo-off weeks for many.
As a fan, and a season ticket holder, I don't like spending what I do and have those games on it but I understand it to some degree as a necessary evil.

RE: Enough already with P5 vs. FCS
1) It is mandated in some states
2) It is a required funding source for a lot of FCS ... you do away with this, and you'll see a lot of programs cut way back or drop to D2
3) Out of 100 games, I will take the 90% of snoozers if it means I get that 10% of near upsets, upsets, and all time stunners

Well, considering we were essentially the Top 1 FCS school for our last half decade in I-AA/FCS, I think Marshall doesn't have to answer that one.

Furman, Samford, Montana, Delaware and Chattanooga are more like FBS teams that are down there in FCS. They are usually tough and sometimes win over P5 schools. I saw a ticker that Auburn was 11 and 0 against Mercer. Mercer revived their program, and they are only trailing by 14. Hats off to Mercer for a newer program to be competitive against the mighty SEC schools.

It is usually an extra home game for the FBS school, which makes it a major source of income.
The CFP already takes scheduling into account.

Speaking of the Marshall team now not in your FCS heyday. Those Marshall teams were quite better than the one today.

Scholarship may be equal but the quality of play is nowhere near the same. Clemson vs Ga Southern has no more interest to a Clemson fan than Clemson vs Furman. The outcome of the game would be similiar.

Well, keep in mind Marshall is a season removed from three consecutive 10+ win seasons, a top 25 season, and undefeated in bowls with this staff. The 2016 Herd flat out quit and wasn't beating anyone, but Marshall's general talent level is still above board on the I-AA days.
Now, keep in mind, I'm actually a proponent of generally dropping the FBS/FCS labels. If the 63 scholarship level wants to crown a champ, that's fine. But who really cares if Kentucky is playing Western Kentucky or Eastern Kentucky outside of conference play from a national perspective.
