I'm sure it's like most larger cities in that it has good areas and areas one just should not be, etc.

It's plain and simple.. stay out of downtown st. Louis (Unless you're there for one of the few decent visitor attractions that happen down there).. otherwise, you go to Chesterfield, Troy, St. peters, etc.

As for why it's gotten so bad? basically East St. Louis used to be the hell-hole, and then people started moving west into downtown St. Louis... and you can see it creeping further west as time goes on (st. Ann's for instance)

St. Louis (and even more so E. St. Louis, who's stupidity has been encroaching on St. Louis) is basically the true sign of Urban blight, maybe except Forest Park (and possible Delmar Loop) area.

I bet you haven't vacationed in Seattle, DC, Baltimore, NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis etc etal. And I said most, not all. Some succeed despite their governments. Your next destination should be Detroit!

Are you sure about downtown St. Louis? My wife is from there and used to work downtown for a law firm right next to the baseball stadium. I guess things could have changed from 20 years ago when she was working there but she still has a lot of friends who work in downtown.

It's like all big cities. There are good spots and bad spots. My wife's family lives an hour east of Saint Louis (and 45 minutes east of east Saint Louis) and it's plain vanilla southern Illinois farm country. No different from a ton of places in the midwest really.
