RE: Thresher/Daily Cougar trash talk
Not sure if it's a coordinated effort, but a bit surprised to not see any UH game thread this week.

Anyway, cokehead virgins huh? Ok...

I'm excited about the game. After the improvement we showed vs UTEP it gives me hope, mostly because the defense looked like I expected it to look before the season, and more importantly, the offense showed way more promise than I expected. I'll take this offense over the meerkat any day! I think it can give UH some problems. However, I am concerned with our secondary. No VJ Banks is a killer, but I was surprised to see DB announce he'd be out so early in the week, instead of keeping it as a game time decision. He's our top CB, and his replacement, Brandon Douglas, has been abused in the past on deep balls. That's what I'm expecting, lots of deep throws. Douglas looked good vs UTEP, so I wonder if it's a trap being set for UH, to try to go after him and either have the improved Douglas make plays, or encourage throwing to that side which will be setup with more help. The defensive line for Rice can rush the passer. Not sure we've had this kind of depth before with pass rushers, and the 3-4 seems to be a good pass rush scheme. Contain the run, put pressure on the QB and force some bad decisions. On offense, use the motion and misdirection to try to neutralize Oliver as much as possible. Much more confident in our schemes for a game like this, compared to the last couple of years. Go Owls!

Comparative scores don't always mean a ton, but still it might be worth to watch the Arizona at UTEP game right now on ESPN to see how Houston's opponent last week does against our opponent.

No score after 1 quarter although Arizona is about ready to score to begin the 2nd quarter. UTEP started its back-up QB - he did play some against OU although neither guy did much in that game (and Metz was pretty bad against us).

21-0 now. Quickly got ugly for UTEP.

Let's hope comparative scores don't mean much.

At the half - UA 35, UTEP 9 (TD, missed PAT, 53 yd FG).

UTEP gets destroyed 63-16. Probably means at the very least that UH's defense is very good. And perhaps their offense isn't as good as they've been the past few years. I guess we'll see tonight for sure.

Nice article on college football returning to the city tonight.

I would have to concur. Our defense is the backbone of this team. Our offense needs to find itself.

We've unfortunately let quite a few offenses find themselves against us the last few years.

Imo It will depend on whether UH has a good run defense and can handle the misdirection/quasi option scheme. If so, Rice loses by 28.

Houston should be able to put 30 points on the board with their offense against the Rice defense. The only question for me is whether the Rice offense (i.e. the ball control run scheme) will be able to meet that output.

You realize we "only" scored 34 points on hapless and defenseless UTEP, and UH has a far superior defense, especially their front 7. Their DE is considered by many as one of the Top 5 - 10 defensive players in the country.

RE: Thresher/Daily Cougar trash talk
I think the Canada of Houston can cover the spread but we should not feel great after watching UTEP get crushed and see Stanford get exposed by a USC team that was in a tie game with Western Michigan in the 2H. DB beats bad teams and loses badly to good ones. I don't think Coogs are either. Not the same team as last year.

Things I'm looking for tonight.
Agree with comments about schemes on both sides of ball given us more of a chance. No question who has better athletes. I think we are really running a modified version of the triple option and give Lynch credit for a very intelligent ball control offense. Wish we could have tried it out-of-the-gates against Prairie View vs. Stanford w/ a frosh QB but as time goes on, expect to see us get better, starting tonight.

I think their D is very aggressive and the motion and misdirection will either gash them by being out of position or slow the pursuit down...both of which are good. Question will be whether Glaesman has his breakout game and can make plays with his feet and hit open receivers when he gets his shots. He will have open guys as Coog DB's have a lot of motion/misdirection to look at while receivers are running down the field. Would really like to see Cephus have a big night with our own big plays. He is our next Jordan Taylor.

Our D is improved and I don't expect to see the secondary torched like in previous games with the new schemes and coaching. Expect to see Houston try to get up big early but unsuccessfully throw deep balls They end-up giving up sacks and/or lots of incomplete passes in the 1Q. Then Major goes to the dink and dunk and allow their RB get a bunch of 5-10 yard runs from spreading us out. I think they will make mistakes if you force them on 10 play drives. This approach and our ball control approach end-up slowing the game down from a track meet.

For us to win, it is going to require: no screw-ups in Special Teams, Glaesman breaks out, win turnovers, and make them earn each point. I don't see us doing all of those things for four quarters but do see some of them happening throughout the game. Owls hang around 21-17 for awhile creating a few quiet moments in their erector set stadium..but Coogs finally pull away with big plays and grind out a 35-17 win.

Well aware sir. Trying the optimistic mode presently, I think it a little more positive to state the situation as "If Rice can...." than coming on here and trolling the board to see whom wants to give me the most points for a bet if I take Rice. Fair enough?
