Breaking now on Twitter. Dean has been hired to coach Auburn softball.

Well, that sucks. Good luck to Mickey and thanks for everything he brought to JMU.

He left the program far better than he inherited it.

Such is the life of a mid-major. Hard to blame him for cashing in.

Am I connecting dots that aren't there, or does this explain some of the departures from the team in the last few months?

LaPorte is interim HC. I guess we can assume Mike Houston will be named the permanent HC. 03-thumbsup

This stinks but I wish him luck. You can't blame him for taking a top 5 SB job in the country.

Bummer

Guess that means we lose that pitching recruit for next year too.

CAA for life! 03-banghead

Sorry to see this news. Makes the change of commitment of that top recruited pitcher clear now. Not sure what else JMU could have done to keep him as JMU gave him everything he asked for.

Will be interesting to see how attractive he made the JMU job.

I'd think whoever it is we will still have the best coach in the CAA.

No way we continue to be 10-15 caliber. It was fun while it lasted...

Auburn softball had a little scandal this past year. Maybe Mickey can get them on the right track.
Clint Myers had been very successful there.

Yikes, somehow I missed all that. Sounds more like a big scandal. Bad idea to hire your own kids as coaches.

While I agree it may be unlikely, why the projected doom and gloom? JMU caught lightning in a bottle with Mickey Dean, who clearly elevated JMU onto the national scene and made the JMU softball program nationally relevant. Why can't it happen again?

No reason JMU can't remain a top 25 program, imo. A lot of the key players on the 2016 team were recruited by the previous staff if I'm not mistaken, so it's not like MD built the whole program from scratch. Gonna have to recruit some great pitchers going forward in order to compete with the SEC schools though. Of course there's no guarantee that MD would have recruited another Good if he'd stayed.

We should at least be ok for this season, as long as Megan Good stays. I haven't seen any rumors of her going anywhere, so I assume she's staying.

No surprise here but I've been to Alabama too many times for work and you couldn't pay me enough to live in that dump. But, good luck to Mickey.

Speaking of, I'm hoping we can keep Megan in the program as a coach or in some capacity upon graduation. That is, if she is interested in that line of work. I know some college coaches who also play professionally.

RE: Mickey Dean to Auburn
While I'm incredibly bummed Dean is gone, it's hard to pass up an SEC job. There's nothing JMU could have done. Heck, we did everything he asked of us. I do wish he would have stayed just a while longer.
But I thank him for everything he did for this program. He left it in better shape than when he got here and that's putting it lightly.
I've gotta think this is a pretty desirable job now. It's imperative we get the right person in.
As quick as we went up, we can easily go back down.

RE: Mickey Dean to Auburn
Just remember that our baseball team was legit for some time, but hasn't been for awhile. (hopefully that's improving). Most of that decline was attritable to a coach that was allowed to hang on too long.
Let's hope that doesn't happen with softball.
