I do think it's been a case of audience splintering. I mean we had 1 night with ND/Georgia, Ohio St/Oklahoma, Auburn/Clemson, and I think there was a Fox game as well at the same time. So a lot more splintering. Thru 8 weeks this year there's been 73 games with at least 2 million viewers. That compares to only 62 last year same time. Last 2 weeks- it is a 20-14 edge for this year

I generally agree. I don't think lower ratings have anything to do with supposed political factors. That's a red herring. There simply aren't as many great matchups and, to the extent that there are, I believe you have a good point that too many of them have been on at the exact same time. Last year, it seemed like there was at least one huge matchup each week. Also, since all of the top Big Ten games were still on ABC/ESPN last year, ABC/ESPN could slot the times so that weeks where multiple conferences had big games wouldn't be going up against each other.

The issue Quo is on which network are they doing so well? So far it looks overwhelmingly like it is ESPN. I think they had 1 more game in the top 10 than did the SEC but that was in the first few weeks. Most of the more compelling SEC match ups happen after October.

Yes, my local sports talk station has an "LSU - Alabama kickoff countdown" clock they are announcing every 20 or so minutes, even though the game is like 9 days away, LOL.

But FWIW, I'm surprised Michigan/PSU trounced USC/Notre Dame so badly last week. To me, USC/ND was the more compelling matchup.

I think that tells us more about West Coast viewer interest and the network broadcasting the game than it does about whether or not it's the better match up. Compare that game to USC / UCLA and you'll have your answer.

ND was leading at halftime 28-0. Not many people were watching the 2nd half.

I think Michigan-PSU was also the more compelling matchup from a national perspective simply because PSU was (and still is) in the top 4. We've seen pretty good evidence since the 4-team playoff was instituted that there has been a marked shift in viewership coalescing around the top 4 to 6 teams whoever they might be, whereas the old BCS system was still very heavily brand name based regardless of ranking. Plus, even if you take in the brand name factor, Penn State and Michigan are as big as anyone, anyway. Personally, I think this is a good thing where there's a bit of democratization of TV ratings based on merit. To be sure, the biggest brands like Alabama and Ohio State getting an even bigger bounce when they're in playoff contention, but it's becoming more like the NFL (e.g. the NFL maximizes its audience when marquee franchises when the Cowboys are in contention, but they still draw massive ratings for whoever the best matchup of the weeks might be).

Well Frank that's because neither of you would be among those offended by the political factors. I promise you that it is no red herring down here.

But the underscored I agree is a big part of the problem as well. It's is not the only factor, but it is a big one.

The biggest issue I have with left, or right, leaning millennials is that if something is not experienced by them it doesn't exist. If it happened before they came of age it is not important. And if it is contrary to their limited, but collective, world view it is automatically not a valid point or issue.

I would say the NFL is bleeding down on College Sports and by the end of the year the numbers will reflect it. But it's more than that. The gross lack of values being put on display by schools like Penn State, Baylor, and North Carolina are impacting the numbers as well. But then so too is the true economy where wages for most don't keep up with the real inflation that includes food & fuel costs. Couple those factors with the rapid rise of health care costs and many people are dealing with issues far and away more crucial than sports. The annoyance of the protests and the emblematic loss of values by the schools mentioned simply help them to tune out and turn off.

Now if you don't like the reality of that then fine. Just bury your heads in the sand and I'm sure the problem will magically go away. Probably exactly as well as it goes away when the problem is the national debt, health care, terrorism, and a palpable militaristic build up in Asia, and I'm not talking about North Korea. I'm sure the declining attendance that most of your venues have experienced is just fictitious as well. Just like the increasingly bad basketball numbers and the 10% sag of the NFL.

Most Americans have always, and will continue to, vote with their feet on all of the issues your generation is so certain they are correct about. They simply quit going to churches they no longer believe teach the truth, simply quit donating to things that don't reflect their values, and don't attend events where things are expressed that are offensive to them. They don't march, protest, or throw hissy fits on TV. They just withhold their support. I'd say ESPN is feeling some that. FOX's numbers stink so much that they just about don't matter. And ESPN's portrayal of college sports continues to irritate people to the point of making them turn off.

Stocks, ratings, donations and gate numbers all tell the same story. I'd say that is one red herring that is flopping all over the dock. Too bad it isn't a catfish. A catfish flopping around would fin you and then you would have to acknowledge it.

I truly feel sorry for you. You can't address a problem until it is acknowledged. You can't solve one without admitting the mistakes that led to it. And you can't implement the solution without apologizing for the breakdown and seeking the return of the clients you've lost. I find all three to be virtually impossible for folks these days.

I don't buy the PSU in top 4 argument because the CFP hasn't released any rankings yet. I do think there is a top 4 effect, but it only kicks in once the CFP starts announcing its rankings.

As for brand, yes, Michigan and PSU are as big as anyone, but so are USC and Notre Dame.

Maybe it's an NBC effect? NBC just isn't as invested in college football to the degree that ESPN/ABC are, so NBC games don't get the seven-days-a-week promotion, and from multiple channels, that ESPN/ABC games get?

Penn St/Ohio St gets almost 9.9 million viewers- #2 this year so far.

Would expect the LSU/Alabama game to get a monster rating on Saturday. Going up against a throwaway Minnesota/Michigan game on Fox and a decent but not great Virginia Tech/Miami game on ABC.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
Miami-VPI will have big implications in the ACC. The other one, Clemson-NCSU will be major but kick-off is at a different time.

If Bama-LSU stays close, or the makings of an upset develop, that will be huge. Casual fans that didn't watch, or tune in late, will claim they saw the whole thing. Since the FSU opener, Bama has not really played a marquee matchup. Their remaining games (excluding Mercer) are better for TV, including, of course, LSU.

While Georgia is a 24 1/2 point favorite over South Carolina, it will get added attention due to being a regional rivalry game, SC currently holding #2 positon in the SEC-E, and particularly Georgia being undefeated and holding the top position in the first CFP poll this season.

updated for last week. LSU/Alabama got #6 for the week.

The Miami/Notre Dame tonight should get a monster number. And would think Georgia/Auburn will get a good number as well at 330.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
based on the overnight numbers- we should have 2 of the top 5 games so far this year from Saturday- both Georgia/Auburn and Notre Dame/Miami got 4.7 and 4.5 ratings. That normally translates into the 8-9 million range.

The Oklahoma/TCU game will be lucky to have gotten 4 million.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
just looking forward- I think the Big Ten is praying that Wisconsin beats Michigan this weekend. If they don't their title game may be utterly meaningless in the playoff picture.

I mean we could have-
1230- B12 title game 11-1 Oklahoma vs 10-2 TCU
4pm- SEC title game 12-0 Alabama vs 11-1 Georgia
8pm- ACC title game 11-0 Miami vs 11-1 Clemson
8pm- Big Ten title game 11-1 Wisconsin vs 10-2 Ohio St
while a good game, the Big Ten game at that point could be meaningless.

The Iron Bowl next weekend should be well over 10 million.

also saw the Alabama/Miss St game drew a 3.8 rating, which should translate into around 6.8-7 million viewers. will be top 10- but probably only for a week or 2.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
updated with last weekend. 3 games in the top 10.

should have nothing this weekend- then next weekend we get-
Ohio St/Michigan
Alabama/Auburn
Notre Dame/Stanford

all of which should get great ratings. Alabama/Auburn may very well top the entire list when all is said and done.

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
so just saw- Michigan/Wisconsin got 5.226 million- not good enough for list(think #12 for season).

This weekend we get-
Ohio St/Michigan @ Noon on Fox(opposite it is Georgia/Georgia Tech)
Alabama/Auburn @ 330 on CBS(opposite it is Wisconsin/Minnesota and Michigan St/Rutgers)
Notre Dame/Stanford @ 8 on ABC(opposite it is Washington St/Washington, Clemson/South Carolina)

Think Alabama/Auburn blows everything else away. Should be the best game of the day. Ohio St/Michigan has the threat of being a blowout(and a game in Georgia/Ga Tech that could be close and is important to the title race).

RE: 2017 Top Rated College Football games
saw Alabama/Auburn got a 7.8 overnight rating- up 66% from last year.
Ohio St/Michigan got a 6.7 rating. down 36% from last year

using final numbers from last year this would equate to-
Alabama/Auburn getting 13.68 million
Michigan/Ohio St getting 10.65 million

If those are accurate-
Alabama/Auburn #1 game of the year so far. Michigan/Ohio St #3 game of the year.

the numbers were pretty much spot on.

this week should get at least Alabama/Auburn for sure. Not sure if Ohio St/Wisconsin or Miami/Clemson will get enough- or they'll split the viewership. May depend on which is the better game.

so looks like Auburn/Georgia will be #1 game of the year.
Ohio St/Wisconsin #3.

Oklahoma/TCU won't crack top 10.

Not seen the Clemson/Miami rating yet.

4 of the top 10 had Alabama and 3 had Ohio St. Those are the current ratings kings.

FOX had 3 of the top 6. Pretty easy to see why they paid the extra money for the Big Ten contract.

but overall, the ratings for Big Ten for Fox and ABC/ESPN were close to equal- if anything I think ABC/ESPN probably wound up beating them. Yeah Fox got the higher individual games, but ABC/ESPN got a lot of depth.

too many weeks for Fox like October 21
ABC got Michigan/Penn St with almost 7 million viewers
Fox got Wisconsin/Maryland with 1.5 million viewers

Also, While Fox did get a lot of great games- FS1 really didn't. FS1 had 4 Big Ten games drawing over 1 million viewers with the top one being Nebraska/Ohio St which got only 2.375 million viewers. ESPN had 5 of those games, including Indiana/Ohio St which got over 5 million viewers.

Is it? They got some big ratings numbers for games on Fox OTA. But CBS gets numbers that are as large or larger, and they pay much less. CBS is getting a lot more bang for the buck.

The point of spending all that money on the Big Ten should have been to bring FS1 audiences consistently to the size of ESPN audiences for comparable games, or at least ESPN2 audience. But FS1 continues to fail to deliver audiences of that size. If the only goal was to get a few top-10 or top-20 audiences for games on Fox OTA, then Fox should have paid a lot less and bought only the top Big Ten game of the week, like CBS did with the SEC games.
