RE: UAB shatters enrollment record and welcomes largest, highest-achieving freshman class
Awesome! I was hoping we'd get above 20k this fall, but this exceeded my expectation. I'd love to see us keep growing enrollment to 25k. An increase of 1,367 students equals a direct increase of $34,175 to the football, bowling, and rifle fund via the $25 student fee.

When you realize why they are increasing enrollment you don't get as excited

Why are they increasing enrollment - other than the obvious reasons?

Care to expand on that? What thing other than making more money for the university would be motivating this?

This is really good news for us. I understand the contempt for anything related to UABOT. However, you chose to take this story and $hit on it. Why?

Increasing enrollment at UAB is an all around positive thing for UAB and Birmingham.

It is, for a number of reasons. That said, this is the exact same strategy that UAT has embraced. UAB's cash flow generates about 70% of UA System revenue, and UAT taps it to finance their billion dollar debt. I'm less enthusiastic than I would be if a UAB Board of Trustees was choosing where to invest that money.

They are increasing enrollment without dumbing down the student base, either.
Quote:The freshman class is UAB's most academically prepared, with an average ACT of 25.1 and average high school GPA of 3.66.
Now, I'm personally happy to have gotten the opportunity to go to UAB despite my poor high school grade performance, but I know this is a point that comes up often from naysayers on increased enrollment strategies.

This theory really doesn't hold IMO.
Eventually the society with the overlord's foot on their neck grows tired and strong enough (think $$ and number of constituents here) to overthrow the oppressor. Short term pain for a long term gain.

RE: UAB shatters enrollment record and welcomes largest, highest-achieving freshman class
I am delighted to see the enrollment numbers for 2017 and expect the rise to continue as the millenial generation students seem to prefer schools in urban environments.
I am wondering what percentage of these new students are coming from Alabama's own public high schools where funding for the lower 70% of the state's 135 public school districts continue to lag behind a decade ago. Is UAB having to "import" out of state students (like Bama has done - about 60% of recent "frosh" classes) in order to get those ACT and GPA numbers they both like to brag about?

84.2% from state of Alabama.

Not only out of state, but out of country.

I love it when people put cryptic (and likely inaccurate) remarks on message boards and then when asked for explanations follow up with equally unclear phrases. It's so cute AND confusing!

84.2% from state of Alabama.
The stat chart does say that 1,935 of the total 2299 are from Alabama, but does not indicate how many are from public high schools in Alabama. There are dozens of private (religious and secular) high schools in Alabama whose standards may or may not meet state requirements. The recently discussed problem of church related daycare not being state licensed or regulated also applies to church related K-12 schools as well.
EX: A friend's son made excellent grades in a local church related school but quit three months short of graduation. He then took and failed his GED tests three times before giving up.

I don't know what Tuscaloosa has to do with it. UAB is pursuing a different strategy, increasing enrollment while keeping incoming ACT and GPAs high, as well as keeping a healthy mix of in-state students.

No money gets transferred from UAB to UA except shared expenses for the System office. UAB releases a financial report every single year, a billion dollars isn't getting transferred without anyone noticing.

The strategy for UAB may be to grow the international student population which may bring in even more money than the out of state.
Obviously it would not be reflected in the current enrollment however it will be interesting to monitor going forward.

What's the latest 4 year graduation rate? Last I remember was around 35%.
