Ole Miss Announces Hiring Of John Hartwell As Associate AD For Finance
Hartwell Comes To Ole Miss From Georgia State

July 14, 2003

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss Director of Athletics Pete Boone announced the hiring of John Hartwell as the Associate Athletics Director for Finance on Monday. Hartwell replaces Reed Davis, who retired after having been with Ole Miss since 1968.

The Mobile, Ala., native comes to Ole Miss from Georgia State University in Atlanta, where he served as the Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs for the past five years.

"We are extremely pleased to have a person of John Hartwell's caliber join the Ole Miss family," Boone said. "Being a CPA and having experience in both the public and private sector gives Ole Miss a business manager with unique qualifications."

A 1987 graduate of The Citadel with a degree in Business Administration, Hartwell spent four years as an accountant with Ernst & Young before returning to his alma mater to serve as the Director of Internal Audit in 1991. After four years with The Citadel, he joined Henry J. Lee Distributors as the Chief Financial Manager until joining the staff at Georgia State in 1997.

Upon promotion to Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs in 1999, Hartwell developed and oversaw the financial aspects of the athletics department, while serving as the supervisor for six sports, including baseball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, and track. He also had oversight of the athletic facilities.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to come to a school as rich in tradition and with the unlimited athletic potential as Ole Miss," Hartwell said. "We have so much potential in front of us athletically in the Southeastern Conference and on a national level. I am looking forward to being part of a management team that will ensure we do things the right way to give our coaches and athletes all the tools they need to be successful."

Athletics has always been a big part of Hartwell's life, starting in high school where he was an All-State selection in basketball at UMS Prep School in Mobile. The 6-7 forward set the school record for points (1,863) and rebounds (1,011) playing alongside current Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried. His teams were 78-10 in his four years with the program.

Hartwell went on to play basketball collegiately for The Citadel, where he was a three-year starter and lettered all four years. He served as team captain during his senior season.

Hartwell has a wife, Robin, and a son, Hunter, who is 11.

Sounds to me like a professional finance man who will benefit the program.

And 10-4 to that spending $30k on some outfit in NYC. Are they trying to tell me that some outfit in the Mid-South couldn't have done that work for us. Come on....

is probably to a college athletic department what a CFO is to a private corporation.

Yeah, and we've needed qualified behind-the-scenes people like that... This sounds like a good move.

I think it also bodes well that he was a student-athlete himself. Couple that experience with his financial background at The Citadel & GSU and you have a guy who knows collegiate athletics from both sides of the table. Georgia State has run a clean program that has had steady growth. This is a good hire for Ole Miss.

Do you think that he will be able to keep those calling cards away from the players?

Yeah, sounds to me like he might be an auditor to keep the program clean and out of NCAA waters. Not a bad hire, considering the NCAA is out for SEC blood. I honestly didn't believe that to be true until I saw Michigan's "penalties". For 600k worth of illegal funding, they got off super light.

I certainly hope he adds some quality to the Administration - not just another salary.
