In any preview I did including Marshall I had a feeling that the wheels could come off fast for him - with the team, admin, and fans - if things didn't look a lot better early this year. 2-1 is not a bad record, but could it be one bad loss to Cincy or, ugh, Charlotte from going off the rails?
The Doc and Bill Legg haters, who have hated Doc from Day 1 aren't going to like what I have to say. Last year wasn't the coaching staffs fault. The 3-9 season came down to really 2 problems, one that was massive.
1) The Marshall OLine, in 12 games last year Marshall didn't have the same line up on the OLine once during the whole year. Our OLine was decimated with injuries. Clint Van Horn played the entire year with a herniated disc in his back, Sandly Jean-Feilix played with a pinched nerve in his back, Levi Brown played half of the season with 4 dislocated or broken fingers (Brown is the center), and senior Michael Selby who had started every game since he was a freshman had a season and career ending injury after the 6th game of the season. Those are the injuries I can just think of off the top of my head right now.
Instead of panicking and pulling redshirts off freshman OLine recruits Alex Salguero, Sean Behrens, Will Ulmer, Alex Mollette and Tarik Adam, Doc stuck to the redshirts and for Marshall that will be more beneficial in the long run.
2) The Marshall secondary, the secondary wasn't bad but it was inexperienced with graduation and players not coming back. Chris Jackson, Omari Cobb, Jaylen McClain-Sapp all played their 1st snap of college ball last year and then add in CJ Revis who was hurt most of the year. That doesn't go to well.
Now the secondary is being manned by the experience of those players with Ryan Bee being moved to the DLine and RS freshman Brandon Drayton in at safety the secondary looks to be in good shape now.
Last nights game against Kent State showed the work of the defense against an option attack that doesn't mind throwing the ball at times. They gave up a few big plays but when Kent got close to the 30 yard line each time the defense stood up and either stopped Kent State or moved them backwards. And then the special teams blocked a FG attempt.
Is this team perfect, in no way they are. But in all honesty this team shouldn't lose games this year on the schedule where they are favored to win.
