It is one thing if you are a UCLA, where local students have other options close by to fulfill their academic needs, but for a Houston or even UCF, locals depend on those schools to provide them an education either part time or for those students who are battling to reach their dream of a diploma. If those schools become too selective, then they will be turning away locals who could gain an education and contribute to the local economy and push their children to pursue higher education. It's a tough deal as many think these rankings are the end all, but these rankings have become so screwed to private schools and flagships.

Most major American cities have multiple options for college education. I'm sure Houston is no different.

This same at argument was made when Cincinnati instituted minimum entrance standards. Instead of the main campus, less qualified were directed to the 2 2-year, open admissions branch campuses as well as Cincinnati State, where they could prove themselves worthy of the main campus. I see nothing wrong with that model.

I think that's what the majority of the urban metropolitan schools in the conference will eventually do.

Memphis probably isn't going to put minimum standards right now, but the free community college (Tennessee promise) should move a large number of underpreforming students into our community college (Southwest).

The problem is that the community college is already getting killed by the funding formula the state uses to determine budgets. Basically, your budget is set base on metrics like graduation rates, etc. Memphis only response is to up admission standards, otherwise they will lose money in 6 years. Southwest has no control over that, therefore there budget is getting cut every year no matter what.

I hope this Amazon relocation news gets city and state governments really thinking about infrastructure spending. There's a lot of major cites that need to look in the mirror and figure out that they need to invest in their metropolitan research universities. West Tennessee won't get a new Car plant or a big corporate relocation until the UofM hits Tier One status.

Memphis will start pushing hard for in the state legislature for funding to get to Tier 1 Carnegie status. The presentations have already be given to our board of directors, our new board is mostly members of our corporate community. It will be interesting on how that goes since FedEx is by far the biggest lobbyist in the State.
