US News Rankings (or unrankings for some), AAC edition
The annual somewhat meaningless US News college rankings are out, and Memphis has some company! Last year's rankings in parentheses.

Braniac Category:
Tulane - 40 (39)
UConn - 56 (60)
SMU - 61 (56)
Tulsa - 87 (86)

We collectively have something like 300,000 students Category:
Temple - 115 (118)
Cincinnati - 133 (135)
South Florida - 140 (159)
Central Florida - 171 (176)

Hey, we're ranked Category:
Houston - 194 (194)
East Carolina - 207 (210)

Thank the good lord above that Wichita State is in the conference Category:
Memphis - Unranked

We're a basketball school and this proves it Category:
Wichita State - Unranked

We're all having second thoughts Category:
Illinois State - 159

RE: US News Rankings (or unrankings for some), AAC edition
i honestly don't get usnews rankings

houston is harder to get into than 90 schools in front of them, has bigger endowment than 70 in front of them
a higher Carnegie classification than 70 schools in front of them (the leading college classifier)

i get that Houston has a shittty 4year and 6 year graduation rate but how can you weight it that much in a college ranking

not saying this is houston.. but if you had the best professor in the nation but he is hard and 30% of the students drop out because of that.. and you had the worst teacher in the nation but easy and 100% graduate is the second a better college/professor

i will never understand why that is weighed so heavily

The weird thing for Houston is the grad rate is improving, but it doesn't seem to make much difference in the rating. I thought it would.

I figured we'd be shooting up the rankings, as well. It seems like we improve year over year in all the categories, but never budge.

Didn't Florida's president once vote them on equal footing with the Ivies, and the rest of the Florida schools as "marginal"? USNWR's methodology certainly isn't perfect.

RE: US News Rankings (or unrankings for some), AAC edition
UH's graduation rates have little to do with a hard professor. The rates are low because of the large part-time student population and the fact that UH provides an enormous service; providing many first generation college students access to a high quality degree. However, that means many drop in and out due to things like cost, lack of scholarship/grant money, and familial issues.

I went to Cornell for undergrad and UH for grad school. The only real differences between the two schools was the Cornell had tons of money to throw at kids and my UH classmates were MUCH more diverse and I am not just talking about race/ethnicity. In my second year of grad school, I found out one of my classmates was living in a women's shelter and was in her 6th year of a 2 year program because that is the only way she could do it. She was smarter than anyone I met at Cornell and 185 times smarter than I am.

RE: US News Rankings (or unrankings for some), AAC edition
An interesting article, which has a search feature for every school showing the percentage of students admitted from the top 1% economically compared to the percentage admitted from the bottom 60% economically:

"A POLITICO review shows that the criteria used in the U.S. News rankings — a measure so closely followed in the academic world that some colleges have built them into strategic plans — create incentives for schools to favor wealthier students over less wealthy applicants.

Those criteria often serve as unofficial guidelines for some colleges’ admission decisions and financial priorities, with a deeply ingrained assumption that the more a school spends — and the more elite its student body — the higher it climbs in the rankings. And that reinforces what many see as a dire situation in American higher education."

At my age, I've been around the block a few times and from my experience the best skilled people tend to rise up the org chart or considered highly valued regardless of the origin of their college degree(s).

USF making a move and now that we have met the state requirements for being a Pre-Eminent school joining UF and FSU in getting more money and recognition that should improve. Our president's move to meet AAU status has raised the bar across the university and is paying off

Funnier still is the fact that a school like Cincinnati, where three of the four largest colleges (Business (Top 100), Engineering (Top 75), and DAAP (Top 10)) REQUIRE you to go 5 years, gets ranked poorly for programs that make the specific colleges better. Most of the best students at Cincinnati end up reflecting negatively on the USNWR rankings (which are used as toilet tissue in Higher Education Circles by the way), which is about as counter intuitive as you can get.

More whining about these rankings than UCONN fans whining about conference affiliation. That's quite the accomplishment. 07-coffee3

Like it or not, and I agree there are good reasons not to like it, the US News rankings are far from meaningless, to the contrary, they are very influential on school behavior.

Good to see USF take such a big leap upwards. 04-cheers

Genshaft has done a very good job upgrading our academics, and in getting the word out about what we're achieving. That's a really tough thing to move the needle on, particularly at such a large university. I know she's highly paid, and not everyone at USF likes that, but IMO she's getting the job done so she's worth it.

I agree with you she has raised USF to a higher academic standard even after the state took USF polytechnic away from the school and took some of the endowment with them as well as facilities
