How about our FIU and FAU brothers? How'd you guys come out of this?

I have family in Wellington, Apopka, Altamonte Springs, Lake Helen, Winter Park, and Jacksonville. I've texted with all of them and even though they've been through a lot nobody hurt and nobody with major damage.

I was glued to the Weather Channel yesterday watching those knuckleheads stand outside in it. But it was good stuff to see what was going on and following Irma's path as it kept changing.

My cousin in Wellington told me it was nuts there and that's not too far from you FI and FAU guys. They were running off generator last night and were able to let me know they were okay after Irma had moved north.

I know the amount of wind died down but the massive size of this hurricane was absolutely unreal. Even when it was hitting Fort Myers if you looked at the radar the storm was covering the entire state minus the panhandle. Unreal.

I have a buddy in Orlando who sustained no real damage except that he's lost power. It's bad but it could have been much worse, I suppose.

Still don't understand why Fla has above ground utilities. It's not like the top layer of sand is tough to cut through. And where the depth of the sand layer is less the next layer is clay - again not hard to cut through.

As the most hurricane prone state you would think they would lay em under the ground by now.

There is coral rock all over the place. It's a huge pain to dig through and is just below the surface. I wish they would have utilities below ground though.

Anyway, my folks back home evacuated Miami to head to Orlando (where other family is at) when it looked like the center was headed for SE FL. They ended up getting some strong winds in Orlando, but at least they didn't lose power. Power is out at home in Miami. I heard the majority are without power in Miami-Dade county. A ton of tree damage all over the place, but thankfully none landed on the house and the house is okay. Looks like more damage than we got from either Katrina or Wilma in 2005. It sucks, but it could have been much, much worse.

Hope everyone else is okay too.

I would think the water table has something to do with it too.

The coral rock is pretty soft - relatively speaking - and is at least 10 meters deep in most areas throughout the state though not everywhere. There is a layer clay and sand above that limestone. Wouldn't need to go that deep to bury lines.

I know the water table in Norfolk is pretty high but I know someone who works for a company that's doing underground conversions, so I guess it's feasible, at least in parts.

My best friend from college (I went to Univ of Miami) evacuated to Tampa last week and couldn't get out before Irma hit the west coast. Was not too bad, but everything is broken. Some restaurants are open b/c that is the only place you can get cell service, at least in Tampa this afternoon

I feel bad for folks, but why in the hell would you live in a mobile home in the Keys ?

You are really putting yourselves in danger (if not now, eventually)

Came thru the storm with no damage thankfully, but no services (Power, water, internet) Currently working from a co-workers house who was thankfully spared and has all services.

Thank you for all the thoughts. We will survive and rebuild.

A mobile home in the Keys sounds pretty nice to me. I wouldn't try to ride out a hurricane there but the rest of the time I'm sure it's paradise.

Most of the Atlanta metro lost power for at least a little while. About 13 hours here in Roswell. A lot of downed tree limbs, didn't see any real dammage when I got out and about though.

Thankful to only have to clean out my fridge.

For a vacation home, maybe. But not to house all of your worldly possessions.

Saw them interviewing some folks in that situation last evening.
