Taking coach at his word, that would lead us to believe that the plan is to play Cole this year, not redshirt. Time will tell.

The question was more of the "Why was he even still in the game in the 4th quarter" variety and coach didn't really address that head on.

Fair. Just wanted to call out the fact that he mentioned playing Cole, which has been of some discussion following the lopsided win.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
The way I see it, the Johnson/Maloney era is 4 years long following this year if Maloney preserves his RS this season (it's either 3 years of Johnson and 1 year of Maloney, or 2 years of Johnson and 2 years of Maloney). In other words, if we redshirt Johnson and make him a 3 year starter, as many have called for, that comes at the expense of one of Maloney's years of eligibility. Do we as fans really have any reason yet to believe that one will clearly be better than the other?

I would think the wisest course would be to forget about red shirting Johnson and get him as many blowout reps as possible so that he is (1) ready as can be should he be needed to step in and start (which he had to do last year), and (2) get him prepared to be the likely starter next year. Then during Johnson's 2 years of starts, give Maloney the same backup opportunities for the same reasons. Seems like the course of action that currently best maximizes continuity at the QB position for the next 4 years.

Could be an incredible 8 year run at QB:
2 years of Vad (well almost)
2 years of Schor
2 years of Johnson
2 years of Maloney

Sure beats (what seemed like) 8 years of JT and the Ninja.

Yep, this is exactly right.

Getting continuous two year cycles out of qbs is about the best scenario you could hope for

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
Random historical factoid for this week...

...Bryan Schor currently sits tied for 3rd in career passing TD's at 42 with Mike Cawley ('93-'95). One more TD throw and he moves into 3rd alone.

The all-time leaders are tied at the top with 51 - Vad Lee ('14-'15) + Justin Rascati ('04-'06).

Assuming he stays healthy (fingers crossed), Schor should break that record sometime in October is my guess and with a (likely) 15 game schedule, he could obliterate the current record and perhaps set one that will be difficult to break in the future. While he will pretty much do all this in just 2 seasons, getting a shot at 15 games twice almost adds a 3rd season versus what most JMU QB's had in the past (and in current tense, that's a good thing...read: national title runs). Vad of course missed several games at the end of his career due to injury as well.

Good luck to Bryan Schor in re-writing JMU's record books.

Kloo is back this week, yes?

I'd also add if people keep trying to stop the run against us that'll help his TD numbers.

which is what I would anticipate, and also how I would play us if I were an opposing DC.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
So two games in, our main pre-season concerns were the OL and the WRs. I'd say I'm very pleasantly surprised.

The crazy part is that we've done all this without our AA TE Kloosterman and our top statistical returning and all-CAA WR Alls. I think Patrick, Butler and Jackson are doing about as well as they can through their first career starts (I think Patrick had some playoff starts). I think Hyman, Miller and Stapleton, in addition to TE Carlton are doing very well themselves.

Some are even praising Fornadel and Bethea in their back up roles on the OL.

Kloosterman returns this week and the remaining batch of players are out until Delaware (although I believe they're TECHNICALLY available as early as the 3rd quarter in the Maine game). I wish he would entertain bringing them in for depth purposes.

We've been over this before. ECU was Patrick's 1st start.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
Noticed that in JMU's release for the NSU game they included NSU's game notes in there. Hadn't seen including the other team's game notes in the weekely game release alongside the JMU game notes before. Same as what a lot of other schools do- they include the notes for both teams. If you want to read up on the other team it makes it easier to have the other team's notes right there instead of having to go to the other school's site to look them up. Kudos for that03-thumbsup Hope that becomes a regular occurrence..

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
I guess this is the prediction thread..NSU's offense is abysmal. I can only see them scoring a TD in 1 of 3 ways:
-A non offensive TD (highly doubtful).
-A completely busted play/coverage by the JMU defense, maybe off a trick play.
-In late 4th qtr garbage time after JMU has emptied the bench with almost all 3rd string defense out there (most likely).

NSU's defense looks to be somewhat competent- they did hold Bill and Gary to 20. Not as good as ETSU vs the run, but not a complete sieve either. After putting up 45 last week, with Kloosterman back, offense puts up 52, and like last week, add on a non offensive TD.

JMU 59, NSU 7.
