JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
Short answer, Dukes should roll them by 80.

NSU will probably play it up like Thermopylae considering the uninspiring mascot.

Will it be a hangover game for fans. I know myself personally have a 5:30 AM flight from Raleigh to California the next day.... Also cannot yell due to the business travel though my foot will probably bear a hole through the metal with the way I was stamping yesterday.

Go Deyukes!

If there are any drinking games correlated to the Dukes scoring, then you might want to pack some vitamin B for the sake of your liver.

Norfolk St. has been a decent MEAC team of late, but they are still a MEAC team (that can't beat D2 Virginia State)... Have fun at the track meet fans!!

Track meet implies their is some sort of competition between two teams. I'm having a 03-hissyfit over scheduling this game.

Besides the obvious goal of getting the W, also need to come out of this healthy heading into conference play. It would also be nice to see some non-starters get significant time if possible.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
Well, the starters should get their normal game stats in the first 20 minutes. We NEED to sit them after that. The team needs to prep for this like a normal game so that they don't slack off or get out of the rhythm and then our backups need to get nearly a full game of experience out of this. They're nearly the worst team in FCS (lost to D2 Virginia State, but kept it closer than they should have against W&M), so we need to focus on staying healthy and treating this as an extra bye week. Maine has a bye week this week, so using this to rest up and stay healthy is important. Our second string should be able to keep running up the score against NSU, with our third string being able to continue to (gradually) pull away in the 4th. If starters are still in during the second half this week I'll be very disappointed.

I would love to see Cole Johnson get a lot of work in this game, if we get out ahead early on them, which we should, its the perfect opportunity for him to get some quality game reps.

Do you go with Johnson and burn his redshirt again, or do you go with Etheridge since the came is going to be completely out of hand? I'm on board with Johnson being the true second string and thus benefiting the most from some snaps, but do you really think he's going to be pushed harder in a game against NSU than he is in practice everyday? I think I'd vote to save his redshirt, but that's just me.

Thoughts?

Save the redshirt, unless there simply is no choice.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
The student section is again "unavailable" for this week's game all of a sudden. We learned that doesn't mean it's sold out. I'd say the student section was roughly 90% full last week (before halftime of course).

I am surprised at how few tickets are remaining, relatively speaking for the game this is. Cupcake opponent, middle of three consecutive home games, the other two of which were higher demand. This looks like it could still be a 20k+ crowd depending on student turnout.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
I think it depends on what the coaches (and Cole) thinks are his honest chances compared to the t-fr we have and any other incoming recruits. If he has better than a 90% chance of being our guy for the next 3 years, then sure, redshirt him.

However, I think it's silly to sit him for pretty much all year and then risk him coming in AGAIN if something happens to Schor having barely run any snaps in his collegiate career. We were extremely lucky last year that the defense was able to snap out of sleepwalking and took over until Schor was back in. However, if from the beginning of last year we had Cole on cleanup duty (granted, we had Mitch until he hurt himself), he would have come in with a bunch of experience instead of never having taken a snap. As much as we expect to blow opponents out this season, he could probably play half of the snaps this season and have very little transitional pains to start next season. Basically, it guarantees that next year we'll have a guy with a ton of in-game experience AND ...should the worst happen, Etheridge I don't see being able to take us all the way...Cole probably could with the way the rest of the team is playing. Again, hope for the best, plan for the worst.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
I think holding out the hope of redshirting BOTH Johnson and Maloney this season is unrealistic. Would like to see someone get some snaps running the offense (ie: not just handing off).

JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
how often do coaches redshirt a guy in the middle of his career, for reasons other than injury to that player (i.e.- in the preseason)? sure, it's happened before, but how often? i would think it's not THAT often. right?

Based on our schedule thus far, shouldn't we be calling this week's opponent East Norfolk State? (Asking for a friend)

It's not just you. I'm on the redshirt train. I like him so much I want an additional FULL year of him. I would of loved to had an additional year out Rascati, Landers, Lee and Schor.

People won't like this and the coaches might not admit this, but I'll bet they want to give him the opportunity to be POY which will mean allowing him to get the vast majority of snaps in every game.

Beyond the redshirt, which would be great for Johnson and our team down the road, POY is another excellent reason I hadn't considered to keep Schor in. Clearly Briscoe will have big stats again this year just due to the weak competition in the SLC.

I think Schor has a shot at the NFL with a good year, and anything we can do to help him get more honors and improved stats is good for both him and us. Just hope he keeps himself safe and injury free in the process.

I think JMU has had 3 or 4 National Defensive POYs. Have we ever had a POY? I don't thing so.

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
NSU was 4-7 last year. Their HC is former RU HC & Va State HC, and JMU assistant, Latrell Scott:
http://nsuspartans.com/coaches.aspx?rc=682&path=

MEAC pre season predicted order of finish:
1. North Carolina Central (13)
2. North Carolina A&T State (5)
3. South Carolina State
4. Bethune-Cookman
5. Hampton (1)
6. Florida A&M
7. Norfolk State
8. Morgan State
9. Howard
10. Savannah State
11. Delaware State (1)
https://hbcusports.com/2017/07/28/meac-r...of-finish/

NSU (0-2) so far this season:
VA St (Div II) 14, NSU 10
W&M 20, NSU 16

Offense has been anemic at 243.5 ypg (99.5 ypg rushing, 144 ypg passing).
Defense not so bad, yielding 325 ypg (198 ypg rushing, 127 ypg passing).
http://www.nsuspartans.com/cumestats.asp...&year=2017

QB for their W&M game was listed as a listed as a 6'1"/175 true Fr from FUMA. Was a PG at FUMA, so a 2016 HS grad.
http://nsuspartans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4407
Backup QB also a true Fr.

According to their game notes vs W&M, their OL listed avg is only about 6'3"/278, which is small for a MEAC team.
http://nsuspartans.com/documents/2017/9/...017_WM.pdf

Didn't see it listed in their game notes, but from the way the defensive position listings are on their 2 deep, their defense appears to be a 3-3-5, same as VU.

Apparently #95, a defensive lineman, is their best player, as he was the only one to be named pre season 1st team All MEAC:
http://www.nsuspartans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4413

Their TE was named pre season 2nd team All MEAC:
http://www.nsuspartans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4402

Have an LB who was named pre season 3rd team All MEAC.
http://www.nsuspartans.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=438

RE: JMU versus Norfolk State Preparation Thread
During the weekly press conference Coach Houston just said the plan was for Schor to get the first drive in the 4th Q then let Cole get some run after that vs ETSU but that didn't materialize.

Taking coach at his word, that would lead us to believe that the plan is to play Cole this year, not redshirt. Time will tell.
